2011 – LGBT Blogathon
Let’s make this official.
To celebrate Pride Month, YAM Magazine is dedicating a complete week to talk about LGBT worldwide entertainment. From that American indie about Brandon Teena, the sweet teen romcom from Sweden, the Korean indie or that Hong Kong mainstream film… passing through that Korean drama and those American TV shows all the way to Beth Ditto, Jonsi, K.D. Lang and Ricky Martin.
We want to talk about it all.
So join us on the first week of June 2011 to talk about anything LGBT entertainment.
You can talk about music, television, film, personalities, in any language: English, Español, Français, Svenska, 日本語, 中文, 한글, Deutsch – Really ANYTHING GOES as long as it’s LGBT-related.

How can we participate?
@Alix Archer, you can blog about anything LGBT related to movies, music, personalities, television and then link the post here. We will post all contributions listed by day :)
I guess my fav LGBT movie is the first one I ever watched that wasnt main stream and that was Shelter. Beautiful movie that didnt have a sad ending like most LGBT films. I’ve seen it over and over and never get tired of it!!!
@nombulelo, oh! I didn’t notice this comment, sorry about that! I liked Shelter as well, though I do prefer sad endings (generally in all films), I get what you mean about tragic ending in LGBT films.
I loved Were the World Mine ^^ – I think I might try to review that for the blogathon. Hopefully I could find the time…
Here is a few for you:
http://japancinema.net/2010/12/13/amphetamine-review/
http://japancinema.net/2010/06/07/soundless-wind-chime-review/
Maybe ill do a new review for this event :)
Heh – early birds x)
One film I would recommend is 왕의 남자 / “The King and the Clown” (2005). This Korean movie is about two male entertainers during the 16th century of King Yeonsan’s rule. What starts off as a simple task to perform in front of the king ends up being a love triangle between the king and the two jesters.
This movie hit a lot of controversy in its native South Korea at first because of its homophobic nature. Korea isn’t as open to such themes as the rest of the world is. However, like its US counterpart, Brokeback Mountain, it got a lot of critical acclaim too. The movie pulled off this theme quite respectfully, while also having a great “bromance” story.
@GreenTeaGraffiti, I have seen that movie. I think is less controversial then say Frozen Flower… have you seen that one?
@Julyssa, You should write about Homosexual themes in Korean entertainment and why it’s so popular even though the country is one of the most homophobic ones today
@Dani, Well ofc babe! I have a huge feature planned for that.
@GreenTeaGraffiti, Lee Jun Ki was great in that movie!
@GreenTeaGraffiti, great suggestions!

Can I just say I’m toooooo pumped for this blog-o-thon! Queer as Folk is my favourite show of all time!!! And there are a score of LGBT films that are just too perfect for words!
So stoked!!!! :D
@Camiele White, Omo I am writing a little about Queer as Folk. I was such a fan of the UK version!
@Julili, I only saw the pilot of the original. But the US version was one of maybe…nope the ONLY UK expat that actually surpassed its predecessor.
@Camiele White, So I’ve heard but I didn’t have the heart to watch it. Loved the UK version too much
Just out of curiosity, does anyone at YAM have any original ideas for blogathons, or do you intend to just keep piggybacking off other blogs’ ideas? First the 1939 blogathon sponsored by the CMBA, now an LGBT blogathon mere weeks before blogger Garbo Laughs hosts her long-planned Queer Blogathon. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
@Edmund, thanks for stopping by.
We were originally intended to participate in Garbo Laughs’ blogathon one week prior to her LGBT date (you can ask her), but due to our problems with the CMBA we both decided, as an agreement, that we shouldn’t. It was a common understanding that we weren’t going to interfere with her event any longer, but that we were free to go on with our intended posts.
We hope that the CMBA members that felt offended by our participation realize that there’s no hostile feelings between us, and that we hope there’s free internet for everyone.
@yam magazine, Wow some drama I need to check out this site! =)
@Joel Burman, LOL.
Life without drama, ain’t no life at all ;D
@Joel Burman, Exactly! I love that Yam is out there stirring it up!
Great work with the blogathon! Unfortunately I must have totally misunderstood the dates for it when saying I migth participate on your facebook page.
OT:
However I will do a small piece on Show me love on my top ten introductionary piece on Swedish film that I still owe you guys. I’ll try to get hold of the movies I feel might have some significance that I haven’t yet seen.
Again, great work and the banners look pretty dam awesome!
@Joel Burman, Hej Joel!
Tack! Vi kanske borde anordna en blogathon som har med svensk underhållning att göra!
@Joel Burman, we don’t mind last minute “yapitas” ;O
@yam magazine, I dont mind it either but I have seen to few films on the topic to be honest. I was thinking of doing a piece on why there are so few rom-coms with gay couples but for that kind of post I am way to nitpicky to write it quick enough. Sorry guys but you see to do alright with out me this time!
Julili: Det vore kanske intressant, jag skriver iof mest på engelska och då blir det oftats internationell prägling på innehållet.
Ooh! I have a thing for lgtb films, I don’t know why hehe.
I’ll be looking out for any cool films I could watch ^_^
I really liked Shelter, and a swedish film “Four years later” …… I love it when it’s a sweet happy ending >.<
@redkyaa, right on!
The banners are sexy as all hell. Definitely participating in this one! I’ll try to throw up a review pronto.
@M. Hufstader, AWESOME!
That’s a sexy banner you picked. LOL
Love this blogathon, and love the banners! I have a few reviews I’d like to submit, whom do I email them to? Or do I just put the links here?
Hi Alex! Post your reviews on your site. Link back to the YAM blogathon and we will post the links to your reviews!
@Alex, you can also post your links on the Facebook event page :) or leave a link here (in case the trackback doesn’t come).
@yam magazine @Julili Oh I see, is it only for posts written within the given week? I was going to share some older reviews but I might not have time to do anything new by June 8. Wish I’d found out sooner!
@Alex, no. Re-posts are also allowed, just edited them a bit so you include that you’re sharing the post here with a link. :)
I’ll probably be writing up another review, but until then…
Top 5 Badass Lesbian Action Flicks from The Smoking Pen.
Link: http://the-smoking-pen.blogspot.com/2010/10/top-five-lesbian-action-flicks.html?
@M. Hufstader, yes! we’re not partying alone. xD
Queen Christina: http://www.yam-mag.com/reviews/film-reviews/queen-christina/
Great idea for a blogathon. I republished my review of I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS
http://reviewsbytom.blogspot.com/2011/06/review-i-love-you-phillip-morris-repost.html
@Tom Clift, when we watched that film – we wouldn’t have known it was real life. NO way we would have believed that. LOL
I want to send this personally:
http://personal.amy-wong.com/2010/11/11/why-kurt-hummel-is-important/
xD
hahahaha – I’m sorry. I didn’t know I had sooooo many gay-related posts in my blog. xD
http://cineawesome.com/2808/trailer-thursday-noregret/
For Trailer Thursday I did the 2006 Korean film No Regret. Just a small feature with more to come from us over at cineAWESOME! Thanks for doing such an important blogathon!
@Rufus, yay! we love cineAWESOME ~~
Here’s one for you: http://www.multiplexslut.com/2011/06/list-4-top-ten-lgbt-moments-in-british.html
@Multiplex Slut, hmm. We don’t want to be mean, but we’re having some web issues with the people from the CMBA, which Garbo Laughs is part from. We’re not sure our names should be on that same post.
We’re fine with it, but they might not. Just covering our basis~ You might wanna check with them.
@yam magazine,
Okey-doke – I’ve taken them off the post. Their blogathon isn’t till the end of June, so I’ll think of something else!
@Multiplex Slut, that’s awesome :)
@yam magazine, I love all this CMBA drama. =)
The Celluloid Closet: http://www.yam-mag.com/reviews/film-reviews/the-celluloid-closet/
Awesome blogathon! Can I submit my review of Brokeback Mountain to this?: https://thebestpictureproject.wordpress.com/2010/06/28/brokeback-mountain-2/
@Alyson, you certainly can!
Nothing like a gay blogathon to realize how many homosexual movies you’ve reviewed haha
Frozen Flower:
http://japancinema.net/2009/08/24/a-frozen-flower-review/
@Cello, so true!
http://cineawesome.com/2823/queer-fear/ Fozziebare waxes philosophic about queer horror trends.
http://cineawesome.com/2859/sunday-shorts-two-spirit-people/ For our Sunday Shorts Feature I spotlight Two Spirit People, a documentary exploring Native American LGBT issues from 1991 focusing on the berdache tradition. It was eye opening.
Luckily I had copied my comment in case the urls didn’t automatically link:
Rounding up some of my favorite LGBT posts! And I’m sorry but for some reason I’m having trouble getting the banner to show up on my blog, something’s screwing up my html.

http://www.filmforager.com/2009/05/debs-2004.html

http://www.filmforager.com/2010/08/hedwig-and-angry-inch-2001.html
And I’m not sure if this is relevant, but I did an ink drawing of Hedwig: http://www.filmforager.com/2010/08/movie-sketch-project-5.html
@Alex, WOOHOO! Thanks for the reviews~ we were wondering who could cover some of those American films~ You are saving us!

James takes a look at Wild Zero over at cineAWESOME! in a different light.
Great job on the blogathon! Here’s my review of A Frozen Flower:
