Top30 Film Discoveries of 2018

10. The Attack (L’Attentat)

9. Fanny & Alexander

8. Giovanni’s Island (ジョバンニの島)

7. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

Young men celebrating after enlisting.

6. Perdida

Here’s a really cool documentary by Viviana García-Besné, who was always told that her family had made some of the worst films in the history of Mexican cinema, so she spent many years ashamed of what her family had done and distanced herself from it all, until she was curious enough about her grandmother’s story, who had met Walt Disney and had almost married a movie star.

You can watch the whole documentary on Vimeo.

5. Kaagaz Ke Phool

Guru Dutt plays the part of a successful filmmaker that falls from God’s grace and can’t seem to catch a break in life to the point of his ultimate destruction.

4. Strange Days

Our dystopian view of the world from the point of view of the 90s. Angela Bassett is badass in here.

3. Where Do We Go Now? (وهلّأ لوين؟ / Et Maintenant, On Va Où)

I really really love Nadie Labaki’s style. In here she follows the lives of a Muslim-Christian town, and the women’s adventures to try to avoid religious clashes.

2. Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen

You can watch the baddest of supercuts here.

1. Paradise in Service (軍中樂園)
