Top30 Film Discoveries of 2018

This year I bested myself. I managed to watch 126 (132 if you count the movies I didn’t purposely rank) brand new movies to close my Top Films of 2018 list, increasing my 95 movies from last year but never matching my record-breaking 200 brand new movies from 2015. I also managed to watch ten more titles throughout the year, reaching 384 movies.

From these 384 titles, minus the 132, I’ll make my customary list of favorite movie discoveries from year 2014 downward. Many of these thanks to MUBI. Keep up the great movie curation~

30. Actresses (여배우들)

Put together actresses Yoon Yeo-Jung, Lee Mi-Sook, Ko Hyun-Jung, Choi Ji-Woo, and brand new international favorites Kim Min-Hee and Kim Ok-bin playing a version of themselves; exploring their insecurities, rivalries and own personalities as they go about their actress-ing business for a Vogue shoot on Christmas Eve.

29. Cabeza de Vaca

This Mexican-Spanish-Brit-American co-production would make a great “The Americas and its Explorers” double Double Feature with Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo, Ciro Guerra’s Embrace of the Serpent + James Gray’s The Lost City of Z.

I caught this by chance on cable. I was shook when I realized that’s Big Tony Leung. lol
