Rekha Bhardwaj – Hamari Atariya – Dedh Ishqiya

I’m unsure where to post and what to tag in all of this. I’m all new to it, but… this is the first time I’m following up on news on an Indian movie, after being giddy watching Ishqiya and keeping tabs on Madhuri Dixit.

I had read that songs (or item numbers, as they’re known as) were heavily used to promote a film, but I had no idea or paid much attention until all I read about Dedh Ishqiya was that Madhuri Dixit was to have a dance number in it [1][2]. Or maybe English sources are just lacking, but that’s all the information I was able to read online.

And here it is~ the much awaited clip:

My hindi is terrible, and truth be told- I’m not even sure if this is hindi. What I could google is that the word “hamari” (हमारी) refers to “we, our, us” and “atariya” (अटरिया) is translating as “atria;” however, a quick lyric search [1] reveals it as “balcony.” “Our/My Balcony” sounds muchhhh better than “My portion of the blood collection chamber of the heart.” xD

Rekha Bhardwaj is a playback singer, who’s sung for recent movies such as (of course) Ishqiya, Barfi, and lastly Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which includes the last Madhuri Dixit number for Ghagra [clip]. This time around, she’s singing a modernized version of Hamari Atariya (or Hamari Atariya Pe or Hamri Ataritya Pe or Hamari Atariya Pe Aao) a Thumri [1] — or more specifically a Dadra — made famous by Begum Akhtar [ganaa][YouTube]. I’m honestly unable to determine the year of the song.

I have found that my enjoyment of item numbers has a LOT to do with the context of the film.

The rest of the information doesn’t seem… very culturally important to me, but here it goes~

Music Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Lyrics: Gulzar
Choreographer: Remo D’Souza

The film is, of course, being directed by Abhishek Chaubey.

I think you might be able to get the track on Gaana. I’m unsure when it’ll be available on iTunes.

How did I do?
