Top10 New Sounds of 2012

4. Robert Glasper Experiment – Black Radio

Robert Glasper brings jazz, R&B, and soul into something so deliciously beautiful I kind of don’t know where to begin. And when he can meld his melodious use of piano with some of the most incredible voices in music (Musiq Soulchild, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Chrisette Michelle, to name a few), there’s the makings of something truly remarkable. And, hello, his take on Nirvana’s classic Smells Like Teen Spirit? Can we say mother-effing BRILLIANT!

3. Flying Lotus – Until the Quiet Comes

Truly, FlyLo may be one of the most incredible things to happen to music since it became electric. The way he manages to bring sounds together, making them collide like so many meteors in space, is truly exceptional. Picking up where Cosmogramma left off, Until the Quiet Comes is just as interstellar and full of brilliance as anything I’ve ever heard this year.

2. SingerSen – The World in My Eyes

Though I just reviewed the piece (its release being 30 November) it truly is one of the most brilliant pieces of music I’ve heard this year. Since Amy’s review of her mini-album Sirens I’ve been in love with the enigmatic singer.

When given the chance to listen and later review The World in My Eyes I pretty much had an irrational urge to fangirl. I finally came back to my senses only to be thrust headlong into another bout of otherworldly hypnosis. The music, the ingenious of the sound… that voice. Give me a voice and some busted up electro-pop and I’m your music slave forever.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.
