The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Leo Meme Lives On!

MONDAY

Here are stills (and character profiles) of the Penny Dreadful characters. Oh hello there, Billie Piper! Long time no see (since Doctor Who‘s 50th Anniversary special)!

Brona is a poor Irish immigrant to Victorian London trying to escape a dark and sordid past. The Gaelic meaning of her name is “sadness,” yet she remains lovely, spirited, and erotically alive. She forms a bond with Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), who will do anything for her.

OMG! Scarlett Johansson is pregnant! Congrats to her. But for us geeks, what will this mean for Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Well, “They’re going to fast-track her scenes”, according to a source. I gues they will use close shots and body and stunt doubles if neede be. Man, just paint the bump green and CGI that thing~

Here is the preview of Captain America: The Winter Soldier tie-in storybooks! It is kinda spoilery since some pages hot scanned too, not just the covers~

After he is done being Captain America, Chris Evans will take “a little break” from acting and will focus on directing. He apparently loved the experience of doing so in 1:30 Train.

I think when I’m done with this Marvel contract, I’ll take a little break from acting. With acting, you’re one piece in a very big puzzle. It’s like you helped buy a gift but you don’t know what the gift is, so you come back and see the movie. Sometimes it’s nice, sometimes it’s tragic. This process [directing], you’re involved in every single decision.

So, producer Joel Silver who attacked Zack Snyder’s Watchmen and accused the director of being a “slave to the material”. He even commends the Terry Gilliam proposed version of Watchmen… which is kinda insane. This is Zack Snyder’s answer:

I made “Watchmen” for myself. It’s probably my favorite movie that I’ve made. And I love the graphic novel and I really love everything about the movie. I love the style. I just love the movie and it was a labor of love. And I made it because I knew that the studio would have made the movie anyway and they would have made it crazy. So, finally I made it to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world.

Ouch for Gilliam, but yeah. As much as it pains me, I did like Snyder’s Watchmen… and I didn’t mind the ending at all. I’m sorry, mad uncle Alan Moore but your Cthulu vagina wasn’t cutting it for me. Just look at that thing!

So, I haven’t read J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise, but it is on my bucket list. Even if only because I like sci-fi and Tom Hiddleston. While we don’t know how faithful the movie adaptation will be, here’s someone who reread the book and wrote about it so we could know. Damn, that’s heavy stuff! And if everything turns out alright, it will be an interesting career move for Hiddles!

The first paragraph of the book is about Dr. Robert Laing (Hiddleston’s character) reminiscing about the events that took place within the high-rise in a mere three months. It began with a wine bottle smashing on his balcony from a party that was taking place 50 feet above his head. From this incident, Laing notices the disturbing changes that are occurring in the high-rise and its residents, as evidenced by a drowned Afghan dog in a pool, the threats toward children who were attending a higher floor junior school, and later the death of a jeweler tenant.
