Falling Into K-Rock – Seoulsonic Interview 2015

What song would you tell people to listen to first from your band, and why would you pick that particular song?

Nahzam Sue (Sultan of the Disco): I recommend people check out the song “Tang Tang Ball.” Although the lyrics are written in Korean, it is a danceable song that everyone can enjoy regardless of whether they understand Korean or not.

WYM: I would recommend all the songs on my album “After Moon,” but if I have to choose just one then I suggest “Moon River.” I’ve been telling people to listen to “Trying,” which is funky dance track, since the album’s release. So I’m going to say “Moon River” now because it’s a moody and emotional song that shows a different side of my sound.

HEO: Listening to “Luna” is probably the best way to get into our music, it’s a track that’s a bit more mainstream in its appeal.

What have you been looking forward to the most about this tour with Seoulsonic?

Nahzam Sue (Sultan of the Disco): Experiencing new places and new audiences! As a band that has been inspired by many ‘70s American musicians, we’ve been curious about how audiences in the States will react to our music.

WYM: The US has the biggest indie music scene in the world and music fans that enjoy and appreciate new and various styles of music. My music of course is not something very new or fresh. There are many bands that play electronic music like mine and I’ve been influenced by them. However, the fact that I’m from somewhere that is not well known for indie electronic music may differentiate my music from other acts. And that may make listeners in the US feel my music is fresh or new. Being new is not doing something 100% new, right? I hope this tour will help introduce me to American indie music fans and music industry people who are looking for something new so that I can come back to the States for more tours in the future.

HEO: In whatever little ways we can, we want to introduce audiences to other Korean music styles beyond just K-Pop. Seoulsonic impacts bands a lot when they return to Korea too so we want to do as much as we can on this tour.
