Diandra’s Top 20 Music Moments of 2013

4. Woodkid – I Love You

Another sweeping song for the director-turned singer.

3. Stromae – Papaoutai

Who says that an extremely danceable Belgian hit can’t feature a sharp message about child abandonment? The phrase “Papaoutai” is a colloquial wording of “Papa, oú t’es? (Papa, where are you?)

Stromae (a.k.a. Paul Van Haver) drew from his personal history for the song, since his mother didn’t tell him for many years that his Rwandan father had died in that country’s genocide. In the video, the boy substitutes his father with a mannequin (played by Stromae), while watching other fathers teaching their sons how to dance. Here are English translations of the lyrics.

Van Haver followed this single with Tous les Mêmes. He acts the female and male roles of the song in its music video [1] and a translation of the lyrics can be viewed on this “lesson where he sings and dances on a gondola. Or watch this special “double” live performance on French TV that took hours to coordinate. With addictive beats and smart lyrics, Stromae is an artist to watch in 2014 and beyond.
