Diandra’s Top 20 Music Moments of 2013

2. Arctic Monkeys – Fireside

Remember when I commented back on this YAM post that Do I Wanna Know was just ok? Then the song’s slow burn led to me humming the song nonstop. I eventually warmed up to everything on the new album, save the two tracks not exclusively written by Alex Turner (Mad Sounds and I Wanna Be Yours).

Then I bought the CD and played it throughout the entire summer. This is from someone who found nothing to like on their previous album! While some of the sounds and lyrics are lazier than their best work (my theory is that they should to get out of Southern California to change things up), AM coheres well and has some stellar tracks like the David Bowie-esque Fireside.

1. Where is Jessica Hyde? – Cristobal Tapia de Veer, Utopia Series One Soundtrack

I reviewed the Channel 4 conspiracy thriller Utopia back in February, and it’s still my favorite series of 2013. Canada-based Chilean composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer crafted award-winning accompaniment for the program, never distracting from the action but captivating when one listens to the soundtrack alone [1].

Even if you haven’t watched the show, listen to how this track brims and builds from a gray electronic drone to ethereal distorted vocals. Eerie and mesmerizing, this is my favorite musical moment of the year.

What music did you discover in 2013?

Diandra Rodriguez

Proudly Latinasian NorCal American.
