Ten Pop Songs for International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day and everybody from Google to my Facebook friends are congratulating me. And everybody is trying to sell me stuff. It’s kinda curious how consumerist this Women’s Day has become, considering it started as a socialist celebration. But I digress, these days always make me think of certain kinds of pop songs, and every year new songs will join. But here are the first ten that come to mind~

Christina Aguilera – Can’t Hold Us Down

This is for my girls all around the world
Who have come across a man that don’t respect your worth
Thinkin’ all women should be seen and not heard
So what do we do girls, shout out loud

Destiny’s Child – Independent Woman Part I

The shoe on my feet, I’ve bought it
The clothes I’m wearing, I’ve bought it
The rock I’m rockin’, I’ve bought it
‘Cause I depend on me

I approve! Though a little I Am the Best from 2NE1 wouldn’t hurt. And Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop:

“Girlfriend, let me break it down for you again!
You know I only say it because i’m truly genuine
Don’t be a hard rock, when you really are a gem
Baby girl! Respect is just the minimum”

Politics of Oz (oppressor to be taken down by a fool who will serve as image) and Technology/Magic battles (Technology won!? YAY?) aside, we discussed Women. Fresh off International Women’s Day [1].
