The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Coolest girl with a heart of steel

THURSDAY

Well, talk about awkward. It all started nicely, with the news that John Cho’s Hikaru Sulu will be revealed as gay in Star Trek Beyond. Revealed to us, that is. Considering he has a partner and a child, I expect he’s way outside the closet in-universe. This move was a clear homage to George Takei, who played the characte in the original series. But then, Takei was having none of it. Sure he was delighted that there’s a gay character, he felt that “it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation”.

Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.

And then Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock and a publicly gay man himself, answered that while he gets that Takei has “his own personal relationship with this character”, this is a new alternate universe, hopes that “George can be strengthened by the enormously positive response from especially young people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful portrayal”. Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty, and is also the writer, respectfully disagrees with Takei and claims that creating a new gay character will make him or her “primarily defined by their sexuality, rather than simply for who they are”.

Suicide Squad got the covers and the special (including new stills and character pictures) in Entertainment Weekly. Obvious, considering it’s one of the most anticipated movies of 2016. Not bad for what begun as a relatively unknown DC property.

As some of you may know, Cartoon Network will air new episodes of Steven Universe from July 18 through August 12. Yay! 20 new episodes! While we get ready for Steven Universe: Summer Adventures, here we have two clips from upcoming episodes. First, one from the 22-minute special “Bismuth”, which will introduce a new gem (voiced by Orange Is the New Black‘s Uzo Aduba), who fought alongside her fellow Crystal Gems in the battle to save Earth over 5,000 years ago. The other is from  “Mr. Greg”, the show’s first all-musical episode!

Congrats to Arrow‘s John Barrowman on being promoted to series regular on all of The CW’s DC shows. Yep, all of them. The deal is similar to the one struck with The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow star Wentworth Miller for his role as Captain Cold. Barrowman’s Merlyn was Arrow‘s big bad for the first season, then he was a recurring character in Season 2 and was promoted to a series regular in Season 3. Merlyn appeared on The Flash during the crossover event with Arrow, and that led into the premiere of Legends of Tomorrow.

Finally, Ubisoft’s European boss Alain Corre said that movies like Assassin’s Creed are “not about making money”.

It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand. Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin’s Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin’s Creed games.

That doesn’t say they won’t deliver a quality experience” for the fans tho. Still, I appreciate the sincerity!

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Margot Robbie, Patrick Wilson, Tom Cruise, Steve Rogers (Captain America), Geoffrey Rush, Eva Green, Anjelica Huston and Kevin Bacon.
