Bebop featuring Humming Urban Stereo – Maem Maem

Produced by Seoul dance outfit Humming Urban Stereo, Maem Maem (맴맴) is from one of those rare sights in k-pop – a duo, and a duo willing to play with the genre’s template even though they’re still newbies. It actually sounds a lot like Humming’s Let’s Stay Together, one of my best songs of 2013 to date [1], but with more deep house warmth beneath the dizzying cut and pastes.

If Let’s Stay Together was the summer track for quirky Korean hipsters to get light-headed to in the park at sunset, then Maem Maem is the soundtrack for socialites and college girls getting ready for a brisk night out in Seoul, singing in the mirror and all that jazz. Bebop’s playful vocals make and break the difference, adding a youthful and inviting exuberance to the production team’s typically self-absorbed palate.

This is the second time Bebop have worked with Humming Urban Stereo, having previously featured on the Humming single Love Jam [MV] in 2012.
