The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Fantastic news and where to find them!

THURSDAY

So, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. What’s that about? EW has the deets! Basically, Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when magizoologist Newt Scamander travels to wiz-phobic America, specifically New York, and a variety of his creatures, some quite dangerous get out of their case. Shenanigans ensue! Also, the American word for “Muggle” is “No-Maj” (pronounced “no madge,” as in “no magic”). It sucks! Oh yeah, there’s also some character descriptions, since everyone but Newt are people we’ve never heard before. I still want some young versions of known Harry Potter to at least cameo or get mentioned!

I shared the first (quite far away) picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange on Facebook. But here’s a much better one where the Posh Alien Prince is giving us Batman Begins Christian Bale vibes!

John Boyega had a lovely interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he remains adorable and mocks #BoycottStarWars movement as he should. Parents aren’t interested in Star Wars movies unless he’s on it. Also, his folks don’t care about Star Wars, and yet they still made him wash the dishes for not dishing out spoilers! The cheek! So, what’s the most surreal thing about this whole experience?

I think just watching the trailers, for me. That’s surreal. It doesn’t get realer than that. We went to Comic-Con, met the fans, but watching the actual content is ridiculous. I’ve never seen myself in that kind of format before — in a movie that is probably the biggest movie of all time. It’s a culture. It’s like a religion for some people. It’s like, it’s so crazy to see yourself heavily involved in it.

Here’s the teaser trailer of Marvel Avengers Academy, a new mobile game from developer TinyCo, where many of the very adult Avengers get reimagined as young adults. Also, some younger heroes join in the fun too! Or at least Ms Marvel will! Loki is also there! Yeah, those two last reasons are enough for me1

In the closing chapter of Uncanny X-Men #600, young time-displaced Iceman fully came out, and has a conversation with older current Iceman. Jean Grey is also there, meddling and saying people’s intimate thoughts out loud. I know she can’t control her powers at that point, but can’t she control her freaking mouth either? Jeez, girl, shut the fuck up! That’s why people don’t like you Jean Grey! I don’t care what young Iceman has to say!

OMG check this lovely preview of Jim Henson’s: The Storyteller: Dragons #1! Yep, it’s a sequel to Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Witches. Thank you, Boom! and Archaia. The four part series will follow the Storyteller’s tales about dragons, duh. The creatures are present in legend and lore from all over the world, and the first issue will be inspired by Native American stories. “Son of the Serpent” is about the Horned Snake and the Thunderbird. Here are a couple of the (so pretty) covers:

FRIDAY

Chloe Moretz will be the titular character in Working Title and Universal’s The Little Mermaid. I am not very enthusiastic about that. Specially since rumor has it that Sofia Coppola left the project earlier this year due to creative differences with the studios a.k.a. she didn’t want Chloe but the studios did. Oh yeah, Richard Curtis in talks to pen the script.

Here are some rumors about Doctor Strange‘s plot, which include the film opening in 1968 Kathmandu where some Zealots of dark magic open a portal to another dimension. Then fast forward to modern day New York, where Dr. Steven Strange is brilliant but a bit of an asshole surgeon, which is totally our Posh Alien Prince’s schtick! There’s an accident, his hands are ruined, and after regular treatments don’t work, he learns there’s another way. The magical way! And road trips to find the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton)! As for these days filming, while in Nepal, Strange finally has his beard under control, in order to look less like a hobo, and more usual Doctor Stange facial hair~ Also, here’s a video of the set!

Here’s a new teaser for “The Abominable Bride”, the long awaited Sherlock special. In here, Holmes and Watson get reacquainted and it’s glorious~

I’m an army doctor which means I can break every bone in your body while naming them.

George R. R. Martin was at the Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism to receive the school’s Hall of Achievement alumni award. And while there, he had a candid discussion, where he talked the Game of Thrones TV series, the state of modern sci-fi, young celebrities, and does he even have an idea how his saga is going to end?

I think you need to have some hope. We all yearn for happy endings in a sense. Myself, I’m attracted to the bittersweet ending. People ask me how Game of Thrones is gonna end, and I’m not gonna tell them… but I always say to expect something bittersweet in the end, like [J.R.R. Tolkien]. I think Tolkien did this brilliantly. I didn’t understand that when I was a kid — when I read Return of the King.

Here’s the lovely Hot Toys collectible figure of Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Looking at the lines of the armor in all the angles available, yep, that’s a female alright! And she didn’t need a boob plate! Oh, #malditapobreza!

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Peter Jackson, Dolph Lundgren, Godzilla, Tilda Swinton, Famke Janssen, Rebecca Romijn, Sally Field and Emma Stone.

[…] We learned a lot last week from EW’s posts and covers about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and then we learned some more from Pottermore. Like the American Ministry of Magic is called MACUSA, and there is a scene in a Harlem speakeasy. I expect that’s where most of the characters of colors will be. That’s the most logical place we could see “people of color filling this world in an organic way“, right? […]
