The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: May the covers be with you!

Greetings, fellow fangirls and fanboys! This week we had even more Star Wars stuff, specially quite pretty covers, from the same chaps that brought us the Fantastic Beasts ones last week. Besides that, the usual geeky TV series and movies news~ Here’s how the week started:

SATURDAY

Peter Capaldi shades the sexism and ageism in popular entertainment~ Seems logical considering the dude was totally opposed to The Doctor having a romance with companion Clara (played by Jenna Coleman). What he ain’t opposed to, is the idea of having a male replacement once Coleman bows out of Doctor Who at the end of this year. He also doesn’t a female Doctor with a male companion in the future, it just “depends on who plays them”. I’m not sure if I trust Moffat with that tho!

We learned a lot last week from EW’s posts and covers about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and then we learned some more from Pottermore. Like the American Ministry of Magic is called MACUSA, and there is a scene in a Harlem speakeasy. I expect that’s where most of the characters of colors will be. That’s the most logical place we could see “people of color filling this world in an organic way“, right?

EW themselves also threw some new tibdits about the film, which they learned during a set visit: the movie is about four heroes (that is Newt Scamander, two witches and one “No-Maj”), the whole film is set in 1926 New York (but I like the first idea of a globe-trotting documentary-style movie more), this film “feels” more modern than the Harry Potter movies because “it’s set in a large bustling city” (unlike a medieval castle/school), the American wizarding community in 1926 is quite different (and apparently the Salem witch trials were a real tragedy despite canon saying that Wizards didn’t real have a real reason to be afraid to be burned, drowned or stoned by muggles, I mean No-Majs), the movie will be more grown-up (“There are no kids in this movie”, says director David Yates… yay!), and some Harry Potter character may be name dropped in the sequels… probably the old wizards like Dumbledore~

SUNDAY

Box office news! Spectre and The Peanuts Movie finally dethrone The Martian. Also, their combined box office adds to more than $100 millio. Congrats!

Possible huge spoiler! Amazon has spoiled important info of John Boyega’s character. Possibly. We know the name of Finn’s parent thanks to the headline of a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Yep, Finn is apparently Lando Calrissian’s son. I guess, this gives credence to the rumor of a Lando cameo.

AMC gets another zombie TV series. This time is George Romero’s Empire Of The Dead! At least, that’s what zombie artist Arthur Suydam, the one who provides covers for the comic, claims!

MONDAY

Google celebrated the 101st birthday of all around awesome woman Hedy Lamarr, via lovely Google Doodle, which you can see here:

Here’s the trailer of Batman: Bad Blood. The one where Batman is incapacitated for some reason, and the rest of the Bat-family tries to step up to fill his void. It includes Nightwing, Batwoman, Robin (little shit Damian Wayne version), and newcomer Batwing. The movie will be in digital HD on January 19, 2016, and come to Blu-ray Deluxe Edition, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVDon February 2, 2016.

How come nobody told me there is a The Walking Dead Pop-Up Book! It comes from Insight Editions, also responsible for the very popular Game of Thrones: A Pop-Up Guide to Westeros. Maldita Pobreza!
