The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Of advertisements and animation~

SUNDAY

So, I watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey again. Glad to do my part since now the movie has a box office of almost $900 million. That’s higher than Fellowship of the Ring.

My love affair with lists continues, here’s 10 geeky projects on hold/in development that could hopefully be greenlit this year! Everything but American Akira, that is~

And at night, we had the Golden Globes, where results were predictable, but the show was more entertaining than any award show has been in years.  Here’s a list of the best moments. My personal favorites were Amy and Tina’s James Cameron Joke (and Jessica Chastain’s reaction), Jennifer Lawrence’s Meryl Streep joke, Taylor Swift’s bitch face after Adele won, and Jodie Foster’s speech.

MONDAY

Here’s a cute Benedict Cumberbatch interview before the Golden Globes. Homeboy didn’t win a thing, but he certainly had lots having fun fanboying Adele and stuff… and dancing two hours straight at the after party.

Beautiful cover of X-Men #1, a team full of X-ladies… OMG, I might cry! Sadly, Jubilee is still a vampire. Well, nothing is perfect.

It seems the comic is in good hands. Writer Brian Wood sure likes the X-ladies:

I feel like as far as the X-Men go, the women are the X-Men. Cyclops and Wolverine are big names, but taken as a whole, the women kind of rule the franchise. If you look at the entire world as a whole, it’s the females that really dominate and are the most interesting and cool to look at. When you have a great artist drawing them, they look so amazing and always have.

And a great artist we have. I trust Olivier Coipel not to draw Escher girls!

Anthony Mackie keeps being so freaking happy about getting the role of Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Also, he was lucky to be surrounded by geeks that helped him with research about the character:

My older brother was a huge comic book buff. So when the news came out online, he called me and just gave me the whole rundown. Luckily, I have a lot of friends who weren’t cool growing up, but who are really cool now, so they read a lot of comic books. So I would just call and ask them, and they would send me all of this stuff online, and I got to read a bunch of the old comic books.

In another interview, he talks about one of the reasons why he accepted the role of Falcon:

Everything I go see the comic book movie and I have a 3 year-old son and he’s always telling me he wants to Spider-Man or Captain America. It’s unfair for little black kids not to have a superhero to look up to. When I got the call about the Falcon that was a no brainer.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje talks about his work in Thor: The Dark World as Algrim/Kurse. He seems happy he gets to kick some Asgardian ass! He even loved the time he spent in make-up, just so everything could be more epic. What a sport. I too hope he keeps working with Marvel.

Ok, so many people didn’t like the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, but I find it funny/cute, and kids seem to like it just fine. Plus there’s Coulson and cameos of other Marvel heroes… so I won’t mind watching a second season.

    Urbance looks outstanding xD

But I think most animated TV shows were done in Canada (or partly done)… including stuff like The Adventures of Paddington Bear, The Adventures of Tintin, Babar, Beetlejuice, Inspector Gadget, Pippi Longstocking, The Care Bears xD I learned most of it (eye-opening, really) when watching TV (most likely YTV) and they showed the little maple leaf on the corner of the tv. LOL

  2. nice to see that Riz Ahmed and Andrew Gower are also in the Out of Darkness project!

@Diandra Rodriguez, Tell me more about them! :)

      • @mirella, aw man where can I even begin with Riz Ahmed. I first saw him play a sort of romantic hero in the zombie miniseries “Dead Set.” Then he was the lead in “Four Lions,” a British terrorist comedy (it’s much better than that) that became my favorite movie of 2010. (psst it also has a Cumberbatch cameo) He’s been in other movies too, usually…cast as a terrorist. He also raps as Riz MC. Check out “Sour Times” [http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EfXvKKflBoM] and “All of You” [http://youtu.be/HjtXgTlvfPA]

Andrew Gower’s biggest role so far was Cutler in series 4 of Being Human UK. Series 4 doesn’t start well (haha I talk enough about that in my review on this site) but it gets better, in part due to his character.

@Diandra Rodriguez, Quoting Leo in Django Unchained: “You had my curiosity… but now you have my attention.” All the stuff you have mentioned interests me a lot! Seems I’ll have howework for the weekend! (I really need to start watching Being Human UK… some many people have recommended it to me! And it has hot dwarf Kili!)

  3. Ah, first: a tale of two creators.
“Dead Set” is a fine take on the horror genre, where Big Brother contestants (they even used the hosts and the set) end up as some of the few survivors in a zombie outbreak. It’s written by Charlie Brooker, known for shows like “Screenwipe” that critique TV. He also created the EXTREMELY bleak sci-fi anthology “Black Mirror.” Its first series aired in late 2011. The first episode, starring Rory Kinnear, may have had a strong gross-out factor, but the second episode, “15 Million Merits,” starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jessica Brown-Findlay, more or less broke my heart and infected my dreams. The show returns January 28. I don’t know if I can handle it.
“Four Lions” was written and directed by Chris Morris, known for the parody news show “Brass Eye” and I think currently directing/writing episodes of shows like “Veeps.” It was based on his research into terrorist cells and some of the baffling goofs made by both terrorists and government agent. I was glad that the first time I watched it was at home, because I laughed so hard I had to run to the bathroom twice.

as for Being Human, series 1 is the best! but the following series have great characters and powerful story arcs. Aidan Turner had to leave at the end of series 3 for The Hobbit, though, so that was one of the factors in a bumpy transition. Many fans left because of that, but I kept through even though I didn’t like how another character was forced to exit offscreen. Still, prepare for the emotions!
