The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Of advertisements and animation~

THURSDAY

Django Unchained becomes Tarantino’s higgest grossing film ever (in the US). Talking about that, here’s a column about Tarantino’s soundtracks, which gives us the truest statement ever:

Violence, verbosity and killer tunes are the three cornerstones of any Tarantino film.

Dominic Cooper didn’t just want to be Tony Stark’s dad, he also wanted to be James Bond’s… kinda. Mr. Cooper will be Ian Fleming in a four-part biopic. He seems very happy about it.

Stepping into the shoes of the spy who not only created the enigmatic character of 007, but who fantasized about being him has to be every actor’s dream.

Brad Bird tweeted a pretty handpainted poster of The Incredibles (the only Pixar movie I actually want a sequel of), made by the great Robert McGinnis.

It’s been a while since I last saw this, so the update made me happy and made me realize I had missed the start of the “second season”. Oh well, here’s the latest episode of Isla Presidencial. Sorry, only in Spanish~

The rest of episodes are here.

FRIDAY

Hiddles is on a fan interactive charity mission with UNICEF. The country is still a mystery, but apparently he got a haircut and needs sunscreen & a mosquito net. He was also voted Total Film’s Sexiest Actor (Jennifer Lawrence was Sexiest Actress).

I suppose my question is: Are you sure? If you are sure, then I am very flattered. VERY. Thank you, ladies. You are women of impeccable taste and style. My god, you know how to make a man feel good!

His sister thinks he has hair like a broom, though~

So, I haven’t been aware of Canadian animation since excellent ReBoot and Beast Wars: Transformers. But now, I’ve become aware of Urbance. A dystopian animated series not for kids, that gives me vibes of Afro Samurai and Aeon Flux, with Daft Punk-like music. Just check the synopsis:

In the big city, gender war rises. Sex is prohibited because of a genetic deadly virus. Ruled by hate and anger, boys and girls grow up apart from each other, forming rivals gangs. Among these lost teenagers, Kenzell and lesya will fight adversity and defy all the rules in order to live their love and restore peace.

And now the trailer:

VFX videos from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. You know, for the Oscar. And remember, if there’s one thing I love as much as concept art, it’s VFX videos!

And we finish as we started, with a commercial with a favorite actor of mine. David Tennant’s new Virgin Media ad:

And that’s it for the week! Before I go, check this link to watch Quentin Tarantino doing the twist from Pulp Fiction at The Graham Norton Show.

    Urbance looks outstanding xD

But I think most animated TV shows were done in Canada (or partly done)… including stuff like The Adventures of Paddington Bear, The Adventures of Tintin, Babar, Beetlejuice, Inspector Gadget, Pippi Longstocking, The Care Bears xD I learned most of it (eye-opening, really) when watching TV (most likely YTV) and they showed the little maple leaf on the corner of the tv. LOL

  2. nice to see that Riz Ahmed and Andrew Gower are also in the Out of Darkness project!

@Diandra Rodriguez, Tell me more about them! :)

      • @mirella, aw man where can I even begin with Riz Ahmed. I first saw him play a sort of romantic hero in the zombie miniseries “Dead Set.” Then he was the lead in “Four Lions,” a British terrorist comedy (it’s much better than that) that became my favorite movie of 2010. (psst it also has a Cumberbatch cameo) He’s been in other movies too, usually…cast as a terrorist. He also raps as Riz MC. Check out “Sour Times” [http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EfXvKKflBoM] and “All of You” [http://youtu.be/HjtXgTlvfPA]

Andrew Gower’s biggest role so far was Cutler in series 4 of Being Human UK. Series 4 doesn’t start well (haha I talk enough about that in my review on this site) but it gets better, in part due to his character.

@Diandra Rodriguez, Quoting Leo in Django Unchained: “You had my curiosity… but now you have my attention.” All the stuff you have mentioned interests me a lot! Seems I’ll have howework for the weekend! (I really need to start watching Being Human UK… some many people have recommended it to me! And it has hot dwarf Kili!)

  3. Ah, first: a tale of two creators.
“Dead Set” is a fine take on the horror genre, where Big Brother contestants (they even used the hosts and the set) end up as some of the few survivors in a zombie outbreak. It’s written by Charlie Brooker, known for shows like “Screenwipe” that critique TV. He also created the EXTREMELY bleak sci-fi anthology “Black Mirror.” Its first series aired in late 2011. The first episode, starring Rory Kinnear, may have had a strong gross-out factor, but the second episode, “15 Million Merits,” starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jessica Brown-Findlay, more or less broke my heart and infected my dreams. The show returns January 28. I don’t know if I can handle it.
“Four Lions” was written and directed by Chris Morris, known for the parody news show “Brass Eye” and I think currently directing/writing episodes of shows like “Veeps.” It was based on his research into terrorist cells and some of the baffling goofs made by both terrorists and government agent. I was glad that the first time I watched it was at home, because I laughed so hard I had to run to the bathroom twice.

as for Being Human, series 1 is the best! but the following series have great characters and powerful story arcs. Aidan Turner had to leave at the end of series 3 for The Hobbit, though, so that was one of the factors in a bumpy transition. Many fans left because of that, but I kept through even though I didn’t like how another character was forced to exit offscreen. Still, prepare for the emotions!
