The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Goodbye, green giant~

FRIDAY

Star Wars Celebration Europe started, and we had some awesome stuff, like a huge Rogue One: A Star Wars Story costume and prop gallery!

You can get up close and personal with Director Krennic, the two new stormtrooper classes the Deathtroopers and the Shoretroopers, and all the heroes that make up the Rebel unit that is out to steal the Death Star plans. You can see the new Imperial shuttle, a look at what the nascent Death Star itself looks like, and a new class of TIE starfighter that looks absolutely intimidating.

And we also got our first look at Mads Mikklesen as Galen Erso, whom we have yet know much about… besides that he’s the father of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, and that he might have direct ties to the Empire. And there’s also early concept art of the good guys!

And talking about first looks, meet Mantis from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in concept art! There’s also younger more rambunctious Groot! But “is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot”. Here’s what executive producer Jonathan Schwartz has to say about Mantis~

She has never really experienced social interaction. Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.

Another first look concept art brough to us by Entertainment Weekly, it’s the Blade Runner sequel one! Seems the city is still bleak and filled with billboards. But one thing that is different, and by that I mean worst, is climate change. Apparently, “the climate has gone berserk – the ocean, the rain, the snow is all toxic”.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island, promised that their Kong “is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen”. Well, just check at the size of that freaking skill behind Hiddles and company!

The thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.’

Entertainment Weekly, also regaled us with some cool new images from Wonder Woman. Mostly of Gal Gadot looking good, but hey we also got Chris Pine as Steve Trevor and director Patty Jenkins.

Here’s the new image of Doctor Strange created by artist Ryan Meinerding, that Marvel will distribute to fans attending San Diego’s upcoming Comic-Con International, which runs July 21-24. Benedict got asked about the difference between Stephen Strange and his Sherlock Holmes~

The two men are intelligent. Finito. That’s it. Stephen Strange is a lover, he’s a materialist, he’s arrogant, but he’s got a great sense of humor. There are smatterings of the same colors that Sherlock has, but he’s not on the spectrum.

Talking about Sherlock, Troll King Steven Moffat hinted the fourth series, which is expected to air in early 2017, might be the last~

I don’t know how long we can keep it going. I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be.

Finally, there’s a J.R.R. Tolkien poem, called “The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun”, which has been out of print since it was published 71 years ago, but HarperCollins is republishing the poem as part of an anthology on November 3rd. The description of the poem is damn depressing, but it’s great that Tolkien gave us a female villain as there was a lack of it in his narrative. It’s something, ok?!

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Tom Hanks, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michelle Rodriguez, Harrison Ford, Patrick Stewart and Travis Fimmel.
