The Wind Rises Trailer with English Subtitles

From the brilliant mind of Miyazaki Hayao comes an epic flim capturing the desperation, poverty, and hunger for hope in times of war and depression in Japan.

The Wind Rises (風立ちぬ, Kaze Tachinu) chronicles the life of designer and engineer Horikoshi Jiro, who engineered a number of fighter planes for Japan during World War II. It’s a story of great determination amidst great pain and struggle from the Taisho Era to the Showa Era — a period that included the Great Depression, the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the devastation of World War II.

Miyazaki-san announced this was to be his final film. After a prolific career spanning 40 years, the much-loved and highly respected director, producer, writer, manga artist, and animator has decided to make his final powerful statement. This is the first time in five years that he’s taken the reins as the sole director of one his films (the last time being 2008’s Ponyo).

Though the film was released earlier this year in Japan, it’s going to get its first limited international release in the States starting 8 November, lasting one week — in time for Academy Awards consideration. A dubbed version will then open with limited release on 21 February 2014, with wider release the following week.

The cast includes Anno Hideaki, Takimoto Miori, Nishijima Hidetoshi, and Nishimura Masahiko.
