In a world filled with rail thin idols competing with one another to have the best “s-line,” a refreshing new group has debuted in South Korea. Piggy Dolls is a three-member vocal unit that makes most of the girl groups out today sound like singing chipmunks. Reminiscent of Big Mama with a touch of 2NE1’s flavor, I find them absolutely fascinating.
The video for their debut single Trend starts off with them gobbling food and watching TV. This has offended some people, but they have to realize that they’re making a statement about how obesity is viewed in society and they break into their song that sings about confidence and believing in who you are despite being different.
I believe these girls have a bright future ahead of them if they play their cards right. There is a little too much auto-tune used in the intro to the album, but I appreciate the fact that they don’t use it much throughout the rest. Trend is a catchy dance number that gives us a taste of their vocals and actually had me wanting to hear a ballad. I was fortunate to have my wish granted with It’s Not. The song starts with just piano and their voices, which is great because it highlights how strong they are vocally. You Know is a great mid-tempo song that blends the harmonies of Jiyeon, Min-Sun, and Ji-Eun very well.
I’m glad LOEN Ent. took a chance on these girls because the K-Pop scene is ten times better with voices like these in the mix.

Interesting, I wouldn’t say You Know is my favorite track. I really dig Trend, though. I really have a biased for autotuning songs that I don’t understand… I don’t speak Korean, so I wonder what I would think of their songs if I did xD
Oh, when I saw this real quick I thought it was a parody….. I guess not haha I shall listen to it and return!
@Julili, lol. Nope it’s a real group. I hope you get to listening to it soon because I’d like to hear what you think.
@Julili, Guys, you can stream via Xiami.com – linked above
@amy, How do you use that site? My Chinese is pretty much non-existent.
@Jenna, hit the big play button (opens a pop-up player with all the album). No Chinese skills involved. If you click the name of the songs, you are directed to the single song page… which also has a big play button to listen to one song.
Search form works like any search form, and the’ve got a broad variety of artists… the only catch is to search Chinese characters when wanting to search Chinese musicians.
Best voices on female Kpop scene!
@Kolaz, As far as I’m concerned, now they are, yes. :)
I am so excited about this group! I hope Korea doesn’t write them off.
@Katy, Me too! On both accounts! They rocked it on Music Bank and the netizens in Korea are actually finding pre-debut stuff to watch, so the interest is there. I’m trying to read SOME feedback, but comments scare me on things like this because they tend to be so negative.
And I wouldn’t have known anything about Piggy Dolls if not for you Amy ;) If was a pretty interesting piece, still didn’t feel close to wOw. I would have loved to understand what the song was about though. They held back a little, it could have been a bigger BoOm… styling, make up and choreography in the video just didn’t work out for me. Anyways I definitely expect to see more of them in a near future. Not a big fan of TREND but I did like their single “You Know”.
@Carmen, there’s a video with English subs of Trend if you want to know what it’s about.
Oh Just found out that option in the video :P Now I like the song better, very inspirational.
@Carmen, Woohoo! Another You Know lover! :) I like the beat in Trend, but not a super fan of the auto-tune. I liked You Know’s simpler melody and R&B feel.
They have gorgeous voices! Glad you didn’t pick on them about their name, people in forums and blogs seem to be offended by their name. I find it awesome.
@cynthia, I find it very tongue in cheek. Why would people feel offended by the name?
@amy, Exactly what I thought. I think they feel offended, because they seem to think that piggy is calling in on them being fat, and it’s offensive, blah blah.
