For Colored Girls is the adaptation from the 1975 stage play by Ntozake Shange titled For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.
The film tells the story of eight different women who are having troubles of their own, and end up meeting one another.
Crystal (Elise) has two little kids and an abusive husband.
Jo (Jackson) is wealthy with trust issues.
Juanita (Devine) works at a women’s support group.
Tangie (Newton) loves sex, while people — including her religious mother (Goldberg) — look down on her for it.
Yasmine (Rose) is a dance teacher that puts her guard down.
Kelly (Washington) is a social worker who’s trying to start a family.
Nyla (Thompson) is Tangie’s sister and tries to live by her mother’s religious expectations.
And Gilda (Rashad) just watches over them.
For Colored Girls is a mess of a story that has so much drama going on that we don’t really know what it’s about in just one sentence. Add to that overlapping dialogue in flourished prose, we barely knew what was going on.
However, it is a pity that with Perry’s self-serving “I can do everything” attitude, he couldn’t bring himself to call other people to work with him to bring For Colored Girls home. Because the film contains some very fine performances by Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington and Loretta Devine, it’s a pity that they’re getting lost in the shuffle because we hate Perry so much.
One full extra star for the acting alone.

awwww well that is to be expected when you have 8 different stories going on. Here I was hoping it was going to be extra because of Tyler Perry. I like the way he works. I might give it a shot if it comes to cinemas here!
You like Tyler Perry? Most everyone I know hate him with a passion. LOL One of the reasons IMDb only gives 4/10 to this one.
Think For Colored Girls is one of those films you watch with the girls, xD Because it's really really REALLY depressing, so you'll need a girly-hug.
I like his sense of humor and I love, love, love Madea. Yes I do!

@Julili, It’s one thing to love Madea…which most people do (the one redeeming aspect of Perry) and it’s another to like his style of “storytelling”. It’s incredibly one-dimensional –let’s make all the women suffer only to be saved by The Church and a good strong man (who usually doesn’t have a great job, because the Black men with great jobs are all dogs who abuse/cheat on/neglect their trophy wives).
I find his so-called film style crude and stereotypical (and those who are inside the Black community know why it’s so offensive). He’s the type of person to put a bunch of incredible actresses in a movie only to make it over-dramatic, shaky (at best) and completely muddled. He has a rinse and repeat style of telling a story and it got old quickly with me. I wanted to see this film because of the actresses, but realised that, much like M Knight Shyamalan, his work isn’t up to par, and his sense of creativitiy is sorely lacking. For instance, knowing his style he probably made “Tangie” a scapegoat. She’s probably caddy and full of lust and turns her back on her family just to get sex, when in fact there’s so many facets to being a sexual person that he probably glozed over for the sake of putting glitter and rainbows over the whole “God, family, THEN self” theme.
I hate to go on a tyrade, but any time I see someone do so little with so much it pisses me off. As with Shyamalan, he had so much potential to actually be a great filmmaker…it’s all gone to hell now. Sorry, this wasn’t directed at you…just Perry’s work leaves soooooooo much to be desired.

I didn’t see Tangie as just turning her back on family to get sex, I saw it more as her family turning back on her. But she did tamed it down by the end.
You gotta give it to Perry for making people so passionate against his work though xD
