Mira Nair’s Queen of Katwe Trailer

Here’s the first trailer to the anticipated Mira Nair film under Disney, Queen of Katwe, which will tell the story of Ugandan chess player Phiona Mutesi, who is played by newcomer Madina Nalwanga, joining Best Supporting Actress Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (as her mother) and David Oyelowo (as her coach).

Unable to afford to go to school, Mutesi had already dropped out of school when she was nine, but joined a chess program run by the Sports Outreach Institute that taught her how to play.

Fun fact! Lupita is credited as a post-production intern in Mira Nair’s The Namesake. ;)

Queen of Katwe is expected to hit theaters on September 23rd, right in the middle of the fall season.
