Feng Xiaogang’s I Am Not Madame Bovary Trailer with English Subtitles

After the minute-long Toronto Film Festival teaser trailer last month, China Lion has just uploaded the first trailer for Feng Xiaogang’s I Am Not Madame Bovary (我不是潘金莲), which is based on the novel of the same Chinese name (the novel is known as I Did Not Kill My Husband in English) by Liu Zhenyun (刘震云), who also did the adaptation. Liu has previously work with Feng in the 2012 drama Back to 1942 (一九四二).

The film stars actress Fan Bingbing as Li Xuelian, a village woman whose reputation is ruined after divorcing her husband. Claiming to be Pan Jinlian (潘金蓮); a fictional character from the 17th Century Chinese novel, The Plum in the Golden Vase (金瓶梅), that is the archetype of the femme fatale in Chinese literature; she sets out on a quest for justice that reaches the high levels of the Chinese government.

The film is currently playing at the Toronto Film Festival [info], and opens in China on September 29th. Well Go USA has bought the USA-Canadian rights to the film, with a tentative release date of October 7th [1].
