Aya de Yopougon Trailer

From the producers of that trippy Joann Sfar bande dessinée turned animated film, The Rabbi’s Cat, comes the latest French comic-to-film adaptation of Aya de Yopougon, a graphic novel written by Marguerite Abouet with illustrations by Clément Oubrerie, who are headlining the film as directors.

It’s the end of the 1970s at the popular city of Yopougon in the Abidjan district, Ivory Coast, where 19-year-old Aya lives as a young woman who prefers staying at home studying than going out with her friends, Adjoua and Bintou, who enjoy seeing the nightfall in the thicket. Then one day things go wrong when Adjoua gets accidentally pregnant.

After a couple of years of production, Aya de Yopougon will open in France on July 17th 2013.
