Psy – Gentleman

Last year, South Korean pop singer PSY became a huge deal thanks to Gangman Style going viral to the point where it became the most viewed video of all-time on Youtube — something impressive considering most of the world doesn’t care much about Kpop — and it even spanned a conversation about the song between Amy and myself of all people.

Less than 24 hours ago, PSY unveils the music video for his latest single Gentleman, which has already broken the Youtube record of the most viewed video on the first day.

The video was shot in Seoul earlier this month and it was directed by Jo Soo Hyun, who previously worked with Psy on the Gangman Style MV. In the video, PSY does the complete opposite of the song’s title as he trolls on people until he meets his match in Ga-In (Brown Eyed Girls), whom dates him, have fun and then they pull off the BEG’s Abracadabra [MV] dance near the end of the video.

I think the song sounds slightly better than Gangman Style, but I don’t know much about Kpop to be honest. But the video is exactly what Amy said last year:

“Unless Psy does what this new audience wants… which is a funny dance music video with a hook in English, in time they’re all gonna label him a one-hit wonder.”

Yep, Gentleman is filled with comedy value and an English hook that should work well for those who loved Gangman Style, but it doesn’t look that funny to me. And the English hook seems like an hybrid of Gangman Style and LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It. However, I think the song should almost work well enough to prevent the “one-hit wonder” label being attached on PSY.

Or maybe not.
