Ólafur Arnalds – Near Light

Well, Amy asked me exact half an hour ago to post this video here on the site. At first I was all, “What kind of name is Ólafur Arnalds?” Then I pressed play and well, I am very overwhelmed at the moment. I have just consumed as much as I can about this Icelandic musician.

Something about this song combined with the video just struck me to the core.

Near Light is a song from Arnalds’s Living Room Songs, an album that was released last year and which Amy shared information about here [1]. The animation was done by Lam Ho Tak from Hong Kong. You can visit his oficial website here.

There’s so much I can say about the song and video. I can speak about the beauty of it, how this represents modern classical music to perfection. I can speak about the composition, about how it all sounds so effortless yet so complex, about how the music makes me feel. But sometimes it’s better to let the music speak for itself because, clearly, no matter what I say won’t do it any justice.

I do have one concrete thing to say though — I have never before bought an album as quickly as I did this one.

Music is all I do: I work in music, I write about music, I listen to music.
