Justin Timberlake featuring Jay-Z – Suit & Tie MV

First of all, I’m not much of a Justin Timberlake fan. I wasn’t too fond of N*Sync, but I liked a few songs of his solo career. There was a time in which I preferred wanting to see him continue with his acting career only to see him away from the music industry — I don’t hate him as an actor, unlike Amy — but he’s definitely better off as a singer.

Anyways, I managed to ignore Justin Timberlake’s comeback single Suit & Tie when it was released as a lyrics video. [LV] Why? Because when I heard that David Fincher, who directed Timberlake on The Social Network, was going to assist Timberlake on his Suit & Tie shit… I mean, direct the official music video, I decided to wait until it was released to hear the song. And just in time for Valentine’s Day, the official video was released.

While I agree with Amy that the lyrics aren’t strong by any means and the song sounds better when it hits the groove, Fincher’s music video — the man’s directing a music video after 8 years — is an exercise of black & white elegance that comes across as a sort of sequel to the recent Bud Light commercial [MV] that promoted the song, represents Timberlake’s current lifestyle and feels more like a proper MV to me than the lyrics video, which looks like watching bits of a TV commercial put together even if those scenes were part of the photoshoot for Timberlake’s upcoming album, The 20/20 Experience.

Anyways, I wonder about two things: how far will Timberlake go to promote his upcoming album? Because getting Fincher and Jay-Z involved in his comeback single, a SuperBowl ad, his recent performance at the Grammys, etc. are pretty big ways to promote his comeback album. I’m sure he’ll top that somehow.

Also, I wonder which TV show will use Suit & Tie first. I guess it’ll be either How I Met Your Mother — this is pretty much Barney Stinson’s song — or Glee because they’ll probably jump on this song as soon as they can.

I disagree a bit, I think the LV looks a lot more tied to the commercial than Fincher’s vision. Fincher’s looks visually class (especially the last shot of JT dancing on the water) – though, it still feels spec compared to Fincher’s other work… but that’s partly to blame on the budget of music videos. And JT has the money to spend on a music video.

I don’t think JT’s music has ever been lyrically strong- maybe competent, but certainly not strong. And he sounded like crap on the Grammy, LOL Like- so off-tune xD but I guess I gotta be happy that he sang live or something? It doesn’t matter what he does to promote this. He’s probably going to win a few couple of Grammy (best record, song and album possibly?), because that’s how the industry works. LOL
