Jay Chou – A Sailor Afraid of Water

A lot of people are wondering what Jay Chou is doing. This is definitely not commercial pop. But I don’t mind when the guy  goes a little bit Honky-tonk, which he has been experimenting with since he opened JVR Music and released On the Run (我很忙). In the album, which even shows him in a cowboy outfit on top of a carousel pink pony, Jay Chou has tracks like Cowboy on the Run (牛仔很忙) [MV].

Actually, if Chou’s music wasn’t in Mandarin, those singles could probably create a splash on CMT. Better yet, would you imagine CMT playing country music in Mandarin leaving their core audience scratching their heads? Could you imagine CMT playing Chou’s Mr. Magic (魔術先生) [MV], Wandering Poet (流浪詩人) [MV] or Rice Fragrance (稻香) [MV].

Now, Jay has released his 11th studio album entitled Exclamation Mark (驚嘆號), which includes his animated single for Exclamation [MV] and his Justin-Bierberesque Mine, Mine [MV]. This time around he’s got the cartoony and fun A Sailor Afraid of Water (水手怕水), which combines the folksy piano of the late 1800’s or early 1900’s music style with some beatboxing and loads of Mandarin sound play.

There’s a YinYueTai version available.

If you want to know what the song is about, there’s a translation available over at Aiya They Didn’t. You can also give Exclamation Mark a listen over at Xiami.

Ghost Writer

Here. There. Everywhere. Punished soul that usually watches what nobody wants, but sometimes gets lucky.

I really find interesting that Jay Chou likes this type of music. LOL I never know what to think of this particular style for him, though. I know a lot of people who hate it, but that’s because country and honky-tonk is like that…

I think it’s kinda fun… well, because I like the genre. But I also think Jay doesn’t completely fit the country mold. I would love to see the reaction of CMT fans, though! Maybe he should visit Nashville or something xD Get the Dixie Chicks – OMG, that would be awesome. xD

Oki, this is uber cute! But I can’t but help to think that Jay fell and hit his head.
This is different and it has a huge entertaining value. I bet the song is fun to sing if you know mandarin. I think I am going to have to check his album out!
