TVXQ! – Catch Me

The long-awaited comeback of TVXQ! has finally arrived. This time around, the duo release Catch Me, the title track from their latest album. It’s a shock of a song that’s all hard beats and electricity… literally.

The video is what we’ve come to expect from the group — hard, sharp choreography, stunning set work, and really dramatic angles. The dubstep breakdown to accentuate the choreography is everything you’d imagine the music to be — all stacatto and hard angles. Of course, we get Changmin’s irrational range and Yunho’s superior mastery of the choreography. We also get semi-ridiculous costumes and pretty badass background dancers. There’s an industrial setting, sterile colors… and water… lots of water that dances and moves in accordance to the movement of our men.

It’s a good video. A good song. A good concept. It’s just… good. There’s nothing groundbreaking about it. Nothing we’ve not come to expect. In fact, it’s EVERYTHING we’ve come to expect from the group. That may be a problem for many, but it will sit rather comfortably with others. The obvious maturity of the group keeps them still miles ahead of their juniors. It would be nice, however, if we got something a little… different every once in a while. All that to say, yes, I’m rather looking forward to their album (sixth overall, second as a duo). I’m hoping we get a bit more diversity and get to see more of their vocal maturity and writing skills.

For the record, I was expecting something a little different, given the fierce-ass promo shots (umm… dobermans and suits… yeah, unconscionable badassery). But I’m not exactly disappointed. Slightly underwhelmed, but still proud of the pair of them.

Catch Me was released today at noon, Seoul time.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.

I hope there’s an uncut dance version of the video, though SM MVs bore me to death despite their eye candy qualities, I always tend to like their choreography. I’m about to listen to their album, even though I’ve never liked a full album by DBSK.

@amy, Welp! Go for it… HaHA. There are few albums from newer artists that I like all the way through, can’t see why DBSK (or TVXQ! or whatever we’re supposed to call them as they are) would be any different… HaHA. I am interested to see if they do have a dance version of the MV, too.

@Camiele, hmm. Just did. I don’t think there’s any particular stand out track, but it seems a lot more solid than Keep Your Head Down. From what’s been out and I’ve been able to listen to this year, I haven’t found a full length album that I’ve loved. Or maybe I’m just getting a lot more picky.

@amy, Are you talking in general or just with Kpop. Cuz? if I’m being honest, I don’t think I’ve heard one Kpop album in my limited listening that’s been completely awesome. I’ve heard a few outside of Kpop (three of which I’ve reviewed) that are almost absolutely perfect. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to say that about Kpop… or “pop” albums in general, really.

@Camiele, no- I’m talking in general. I haven’t listened to a Korean album this year that I’ve liked. I did have a couple last year. I do have a couple perfect pop albums… just not this year.

@amy, have either of you listened to Jo Kwon’s solo album yet? For me, it’s one of the stand out Korean pop albums of the year so far – criminally underrated.

@mellowyel, I have. I didn’t like it all that much. I have it as one of the lowest rated albums on my list… but I’ve rated a lot of music a lot lower this year. I don’t think I’ve rated anything that’s reached a 4/5 star this year in music… yet.

@mellowyel, Admittedly I haven’t listened to much Kpop this year. I can barely call myself a Kpop fan… HaHa. Jo Kown is 2AM, right? I like him… his swag is irrationally fierce. But I don’t know much about him besides that… HaHa. I’ll have to see about it. I think I remember seeing the cover and thinking, “Hmm… Tarantellegra the sequel?” But, yeah, don’t know much about him. I’ll have to give it a look-see.
