6 Pack Band featuring Sonu Nigam – Sab Rab De Bande

After the release of their Pharrell cover, Hum Hain Happy [MV], Hijra band 6 Pack Band is ready with their special collaboration with singer Sonu Nigam in the song Sab Rab De Bande (We Are All Children of God) — based on the couplet by Guru Granth Sahib, in a video showcasing the struggles of the members of the Hijra community who often face discrimination from their families, and disdain from strangers in the streets.

The video directed by Nishant Nayak starts off with a boy putting on make-up and wearing a sari, as he admires the beautiful Madhuri Dixit, when his father finds him out. It then features Sonu Nigam, as 6 Pack Band members are shown in their day-to-day facing society.

You know what I love? Ever since I started watching Bollywood movies, I dreamed of a Hijra movie directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali that’s about a Hijra that dreams in Madhuri Dixit musical numbers– you know, a Hijra version of Dancer in the Dark Bollywood style.

I wish to know who is who in the band, though.

It makes me so happy to see transgender people finally being visible in India – even if it’s just one band :)

There are a bunch of films that are about Hijra, but they’re not mainstream and are usually regional films (not Bollywood). However, they’re generally really dramatic films, I’m glad to see a group that’s actually happy. They did the group’s introduction a couple of days ago, but they didn’t present them individually so you’ll learn each of their names :( The only one that seems like an individual is the ‘leader’ (in Kpop terms), her name is Fida Khan and she’s the only one that speaks some English. She was also featured in a video of the Hijra community performing the Indian National Anthem.

This one’s great because it’s a music group, but it’s also an ad for a product that can reach a broader audience, and it’s got a good message.
