Landmark’s Aquarius Theatre in Palo Alto Re-Opens

Landmark Theatres announces the Aquarius Theatre in downtown Palo Alto will reopen on Friday, July 24, 2015.

“We are very excited to reopen the ‘new’ Aquarius Theatre.  I’d like to thank building owners Chop Keenan and Mark Gates, principals of Palo Alto Theatre Corporation, and the City of Palo Alto for their cooperation in this project,” said Landmark Theatres President Ted Mundorff.

As a welcome back promotional offer, each admission on the opening weekend of Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, will include complementary popcorn. The opening films are The Stanford Prison Experiment and The Third Man.

The Aquarius remains a two screen venue, and will resume presenting independent and foreign language films. Advance reserved seating is available online or at the theatre. Both auditoriums have been completely renovated, and feature larger screens, new lighting, and luxury leather seating, including recliners in one auditorium. Other improvements include a renovated marquee, all new lobby and concessions stand with lounge, new restrooms and ticket kiosks. The expanded concessions menu features hot offerings like sweet potato fries and smoked Gouda mac & cheese bites.

The Stanford Prison Experiment is a psychological thriller based on the true story that took place at Stanford University. Billy Crudup stars as Professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo, who in 1971 cast 24 student volunteers as prisoners and guards in a simulated jail. Dr. Zimbardo, who actively participated in the making of the film, as well as the director, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, will appear in person for a Q&A following the Saturday 7:10 pm show.

Digitally restored for the first ever, The Third Man is Carol Reed’s 1949 film noir masterpiece set in post-war Vienna. Featuring Orson Welles as Harry Lime, the restoration helps celebrate the Welles Centennial. Novelist Graham Greene adapted the dramatic screenplay from his own story; the film also stars Joseph Cotten, Trevor Howard and Alida Valli.
