Unmasking the Legends – Interview with YB

You’re going to be celebrating your 20th anniversary this year, what does that milestone mean to you? How do you plan to celebrate and share the experience with your fans?

Scott: Anniversary..What are we doing?

Do-Hyun: Um, we cannot say it yet. Cuz it’s kind of secret yet.

Scott: Ohhh

Do-Hyun: We are preparing a show, but it’s not announced yet.

You have created music that blends several unique genres into your style of rock, using electronic with Risque Rhythm Machine and even a touch of country using the steel guitar sounds on A Poor Mans Weatherglass (뚜껑별꽃), was any one genre more fun to work with? Are there any other genres you would like to try out?

Scott: You know, on Poor Mans Weather Glass, that’s not steel guitar, that’s actual just fingers. But it kind of sounds like that. Like when you said that, I thought that was interesting, cuz yeah, it does sound like that.

It’s a very unique sound that you don’t hear in a lot of Korean music.

Scott: Yeah, yeah, I think we were just thinking about Fleetwood Mac or something at the time.

Do-Hyun: Mac?

Scott: Fleetwood Mac.

Scott: When you’re a 20 year old band, you can’t play the same song all the time. When you play big arena’s all the time, and when we went on tour in 2011 around Korea we played a lot of arena’s and sports kind of like buildings and stuff. We were doing 3-hour shows, and when you’re doing 3-hour shows you’ve got to mix it up. You’ve got to be a bit flexible with things you’ve got to bring things up and down. So I think the band, even before I joined, the band were very used to dynamics. That’s a strong point to DH I think, is definitely dynamics.

The sound has definitely evolved over the years, with every album and that’s what I like about it. Some bands just stagnate and sound the same album after album.

Do-Hyun: That has no meaning for me. I want every album to change the sound, the stories. Same style? I don’t know. I respect classic bands, but not for YB.

Scott: Some bands it’s ok. Like the Sex Pistols, you wouldn’t them to be like, you wouldn’t want them to go down some sort of weird blues route.

Do-Hyun: But for YB, we have to change, change, change.

But that’s the exciting part, when you put out new music the fans wonder, what am I going to hear THIS time?

Scott: Yeah, and it takes time for people to become accustomed to that too.
