Ten Music Video Highlights of 2010

4. Lady Gaga Featuring Beyonce – Telephone

Lady Gaga — with some help from Beyonce — puts together a long-form music video that is actually worth the “long-form” tag. Obviously directed by Jonas Åkerlund in a grotesquely delicious way, Telephone is both Pop and Controversial.

3. Elva Hsiao – Let Love Fly (讓愛飛起來/Rang Ai Fei Qi Lai) Ice Version

At first, westernized view, Let Love Fly by Taiwanese pop diva Elva Hsiao doesn’t have anything that makes it controversial. Set yourself on the other side of the world, where the single was promoted and we’ve got a whole new issue. Despite the friendly nature of the video, Let Love Fly (Ice Version) was deemed PG-12 in Taiwan, and banned in Singapore — understandable being a Muslim state and all — due to it’s gay “themes”.

There was, however, Let Love Fly (Rainbow Version) [MV] which changed the setting from gay/lesbian/straight couples holding hands and embracing, to a foam pool full of — understated — gay men frolicking… which went past the censors.

Runner up: Kylie Minogue’s All the Lovers [MV] directed by the one and 0nly Joseph Khan, but Let Love Fly has more of a cultural impact in the East.

    LOL, Ghost – I can totally tell you are sneaking in a lot of the videos I discussed on my blog. O=o I didn’t know Elva Hsiao was going to be so high up, really?

    For some non-Asian fans, your Asian MV choices are going to be controversial too xD Putting Monkey Majik, Elva and 2NE1 ahead of Arcade Fire LOL And putting OK GO ahead of them too! Wayyyy ahead!

    @amy, I take the fifth.

    @yammag, I was duped! What’s that about sharing an account…

    To be honest, it was really hard not to place Born Free on top, which is my favorite music video, and I would have placed Badu ahead of Lady Gaga.

    Elva… I have a soft guilty pleasure soft spot for her. Gotta give it to her for making that video and trying to promote it in Singapore. This type of thing could possibly be a career killer, but she just gave them a Rainbow even gayer version. In Kylie’s case, which is also about free love and all that crap, she could either choose to pull the video (since there’s no other version), but her decision isn’t a big risk… she’s still famous everywhere else.
