Marya: A Life in Music
2000 – Radiohead – Kid A
I’ll just admit it right here, other than Cameron Crowe, that boyfriend I had freshman year of college probably had the biggest impact on my music taste as it stands now. Radiohead was another band he introduced me to, though when I first heard this album I really did not like it. After a couple of repeat listenings, though, I realized just how great it really was.
2001 – Pete Yorn – musicforthemorningafter
True story: after my first date with said boyfriend he gave me this album because I had said I liked Pete Yorn’s cover of Ever Fallen In Love, which was featured on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. He said I had to listen to this album to really appreciate Pete Yorn. He was right. This is one of my Top Ten desert island type albums.
2002 – Avril Lavigne – Let Go
I turned 16 five days after this album came out. 16-year-olds often have questionable tastes in music. Let’s just leave it at that.
2003 – The Postal Service – Give Up
My brother went to college in 2003 and when he came back for Christmas break he said he’d discovered a great band and had burned me a copy of this album. I haven’t looked back since.
2004 – Arcade Fire – Funeral
I have to thank my friend Erin for introducing me to Arcade Fire and this album, which dominated a lot of my listening time for most of my college years. Somehow I still haven’t managed to see this band live. SOMEDAY.
Uh Huh, coz life’s like this.
Having said that, Gobbledigook is… so.much.FUN.
@amy, I am so ashamed that I still know all the lyrics to Complicated.
@Cinema Fanatic, dude. I see your shame, and I’ll raise you double.
@amy, But your shames like Salserín and Torbellino are totally unknown to Marya.
@amy, that’s glorious
@Rodrigo, my shames are targeted at a specific location. LOL They’re not region-free shames xD but that’s our goal, to let others know.
I love most of your picks.
Suljan kinda annoys me for some reason, lol.
A great list. I had to make my own at my blog ’cause I like this idea (and it goes with my A Life in Movies post for some blogathon last month) and a several of your picks were nearly my selections. Sufjan, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, Replacements and The Smiths are all great choices.
@Jake Cole, Woohoo!
Also… Huzzah for Robyn!
