Marya: A Life in Music

1990 – Depeche Mode – Violator

I can’t remember when I first heard the song Enjoy The Silence, but I think it was either in high school or college. I loved it so much I had to get the whole album, which is just about as perfect as this song.

1991 – R.E.M. – Out of Time

R.E.M. is another band I discovered in college. Hey, where I grew up for most of the 80s and 90s the only radio station we had played country music. I missed out on a lot of good stuff. R.E.M. was huge in the 80s, but in 1991 and 1992 they released two of the most perfect back-to-back albums in history.

1992 – R.E.M. – Automatic For The People

Which brings me to R.E.M. album #2, which I prefer just ever so slightly more. Again, I discovered this album via Cameron Crowe. The song Sweetness Follows was used in his 2001 film Vanilla Sky. There are so many great songs on this album, but I think my favorite may well be Man On The Moon.

1993 – Nirvana – In Utero

Believe it or not, I didn’t discover this album until I was in high school, about ten years or so after its initial release. However, since then I have grown to really love it. I even wrote a stupendous paper on Moby-Dick when I was in college listening to nothing but this album. I got an A on that paper.

1994 – Oasis – Definitely Maybe

Julyssa claimed my favorite Oasis album already, but this album is a close second. My first boyfriend in college introduced me to BritPop and I fell head over heels for Oasis. I actually got to see them live a few years ago. Good thing I did, since they’ve now officially broken up.

I love most of your picks.

Suljan kinda annoys me for some reason, lol.

A great list. I had to make my own at my blog ’cause I like this idea (and it goes with my A Life in Movies post for some blogathon last month) and a several of your picks were nearly my selections. Sufjan, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, Replacements and The Smiths are all great choices.
