Making Some Noise: Interview With Juck Juck Grunzie
There aren’t a lot of bands in Korea making the sound you do, let alone any female fronted bands making waves as much as you have. (I’ve heard about you from several sources on numerous occasions and always in a very positive light) What do you think it is about Juck Juck Grunzie that sets you apart from the crowd?
Jeehye: Thank you for your kind words! As you mentioned above, I think our sound is what sets us apart. Our music is dark, aggressive, and unordinary and it lacks mainstream pop elements. So it’s definitely something a bit different in the Korean music scene.
How would you describe your sound to someone and what song would you pick to a new listener, and why?
Kyunghyun: I describe our music as being dark and intense but if you’re open to it, you can discover beautiful and delicate parts in there too. For new listeners, I always recommend “Dream like a Dream.” From start to finish, that song is dark and mysterious, but somewhere underneath there is a delicateness or subtleness that has beauty and sincerity.
Do you have anything you’d like to say to our readers at YAM?
Kyunghyun: Thank you very much for taking the time to read about Juck Juck Grunzie. We hope to see you at Glastonbury or in London or Berlin this summer. And if you’re not in one of those places, we hope to see you somewhere else in the world very soon! We’re working on our second album right now and hope to release it sometime next spring. Please keep your eyes out for that too. Thank you again to YAM Magazine and all of its readers!
