Juan: A Life in Music

I already did my life in movies, but I figured it would definitely be fun to go ahead and join the others in this one as well. This is just a simple journey through my life with music, that involves me choosing an album for every year since my birth. You’ll probably laugh at a few of my picks, but I’ll have you know that for certain years it almost killed me to have to narrow it down to just one album.

I grew up with a lot of different music, mostly jazz and disco, and I like to think that it’s shaped me pretty decently. Unfortunately, I was born in the ’90s so you won’t see me listing any Cole Porter or Bee Gees (even though I would love to). So here’s my life in music — enjoy!

1991 – U2’s Achtung

A lot of people are always complaining about U2, but something about their music has always caught my attention. Although it’s not my personal favorite album of theirs, I do love the track “One” as well as a few of the others.

1992 – Madonna’s Erotica

Maybe this is one of my favorite Madonna albums of all time and I just love the sexual nature of the music. It’s fairly underrated, in my opinion, and it works as the perfect companion with her Sex book. Plus, the Erotica video is sexy as hell — how could you not love it?

1993 – John Williams’ Jurassic Park Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

I have no words that could possibly describe just how much I honestly love the score for Jurassic Park. I may not like John Williams all that much, but I have so many connections with the music for this movie that I could not imagine picking anything else for the year. Between my childhood love for the film, as well as the profound love my boyfriend also shares for it, this is one of my favorite film scores ever.

1994 – Portishead’s Dummy

I actually had this album introduced to me a few years ago by someone I was interested in and I fell in love with it in no time at all. The first two songs he showed me were Glory Box and Strangers and those are probably the two that I’ll always enjoy the most from the album.

1995 – Alan Menken & Stephen Schwartz’s Pocahontas

Another soundtrack, you say? Of course. Words can’t even begin to describe just how fantastic the songs for this movie were. Plus, what would my childhood be without awesome Disney music?

Juan Barquin

Just yer average twenty-something college student with no time on his hands who ends up watching (and writing) too many movies and shows for his own good.

OMG, Jurassic Park – how could you not, right? The magical notes when you first see the island… and then the first time you see the dinosaur.

We could have been best friends in our teens and fawn over Bjork, Lauryn, Madonna and Britney. LOL

And, I agree on your position of 19 > 21 xD
