January to June: 6 Sick Sounds

April: Justin Timberlake – Tunnel Vision

Whatever your feelings on JT, you can’t deny Tunnel Vision is an almighty audio experience – just listen to those falling synths on the chorus! These textures and small little touches make the whole song a genre on itself (post-rave space ‘n’ b, perhaps?) The 20/20 Experience could have done with more of this, actually.

May: Daft Punk – Get Lucky

I still can’t decide what’s better: this, or Lose Yourself to Dance [MV]?  Anyway, welcome back to Daft Punk.

June: Humming Urban Stereo – Let’s Stay Together

While Humming Urban Stereo released this back in spring, Let’s Stay Together is the perfect summer track for those bored of the mainstream. It’s a summer song for freaks, actually – the boy-girl vocals are warped up and squeezed to bits, the lyrics manage to mention Jennifer Lawrence, death on the operating table and even ‘spanking the monkey’, but it still sounds seriously fun and funky, spinning off a tight roller rink beat into 80s dancefloor heaven.

For the rest of 2013, keep an eye out for the debut albums by the new faces of British RnB AlunaGeorge and Birthday Sex, along with new ones from electro genius Grum and the increasingly influential The Weeknd.
