Interview with DJ Mr. Gin: The Taiwanese DJ With the Magic Touch

Working with the likes of MC HotDog, SoftLipa, Miss Ko [1] and even today’s most promising hip hop artists such as GorDoN [1] and MJ116, Deejay Mr. Gin has worked with the cream of the crop of Taiwan’s hip hop scene and toured the world with his scratching skills.

Hands down one of Taiwan’s most experienced and critically acclaimed DJs, he has previously represented Taiwan as part of trio A.K.G in the DMC World DJ championships, and as a result has long had his finger firmly on the pulse of the international market. His years of experience integral to the production and packaging of a good hip hop artist, Mr. Gin has accumulated close relationships with all three of Taiwan’s top hip-hop recording companies (KAO!INC., TrueColor and KungFu Entertainment), reflecting his apparent clout within the industry. The amiable DJ spoke to us, providing some insight into how Taiwan’s DJ community on the world stage, and shares his experiences thus far:

If you were to sum up your music for international audiences, how would you introduce yourself and your music?

I hope to be able to do an entire set using Chinese mixes for everyone to hear.

Can you share a little about how you initially got into DJ-ing? What was it that motivated you to continue improving your skills over the years?

At first I played with rap, and after listening to many songs, someone taught me how to start DJ-ing! After that I slowly moved towards DJ-ing as a career, and was able to sustain myself financially through this interest.

With the rise of new advanced digital technologies, it is rare to see people actually using turntables nowadays. Do you think the art form is in a decline, or is it merely just changing?

Although digitization decreases the entry barriers, there are still many different choices, interacting with different fields will allow for different experiences.

Being an artist who has brought the Taiwanese DJ scene critical acclaim on the international stage, what was your experience like competing against the best of the best from others across the world?

If we’re talking about mixing, Taiwan’s DJs are actually already of quite a high standard! In terms of techniques I think because we have less people so there are less opportunities for learning…but we are now in the age of information, everything is advancing.

Is this your first time performing in the U.S.? How do you feel about it and what do you hope to get out of this experience?

Actually I’ve performed in the U.S. many times already…every time I get something different out of it! I hope this time to be able to open myself to even more different experiences.

Do you have any new works in the pipeline? Can you share with us a little about what’s next up for you?

I hope that next year I can finish my own works, but not able to reveal too much at this time.

What can we expect from your performance within KAO!INC.’s North America showcase?

Watch out for the opening!

Friendly and surprisingly enthusiastic, despite our brief asynchronous conversation, Mr. Gin’s passion for his art shines through. His anticipation always for new opportunities and possibilities, coupled with his heightened skill set render it clear why he has been such a sought-after DJ in Taiwan. I hope to see him continuing to expand his influence, influencing international communities and showing them the uniqueness of Taiwan’s music through his magic touch.
