Dirty Bass: Interview with Far East Movement

You have collaborated and toured with a lot of artists, but do you feel that you are missing someone? Is there someone who you really want to pick up the phone and give you a call?

J-Splif: Ahhhhh [everybody laughs].

Kev Nish: You know, the way we collab, it represents the fan side of us and the fan side of music. When we started with our iPods, going to shows. That became like a wishlist, saying to yourself, “Ahh, I really wanna work with Snoop Dogg” because we were fans. There are a lot of artists these days that we are fans of. It’s kind of hard to just name one. But like, now that we are here, we have done a remix with Robyn and we had a vocal of her. But to do an official song with Robyn would be incredible.

What do you like about Robyn?

Kev Nish: Her writing skills are out of this planet. The way she writes for a person and about relationships, you don’t have many artists like that. We write all of our own hooks, so we co-produce and write, even if there are other people singing it. So to actually get in and to write something with her would be an honor.

So, you guys have been on tour for a long time, you must have some cool stories to share from that time?

Kev Nish: We do! We got one, from the Lil Wayne/Rick Ross tour. The hotel.

Prohgress to J-Splif:  You better tell it! You are the fool who actually did it!

J-Splif: Yeah, we were on the Lil Wayne tour for about two months during the summer. And you know they have, like, crazy luxurious tour buses with a flat screen and a barbecue pit and all that stuff. So we were quite jealous watching them barbecuing and watching TV. Our bus wasn’t equipped with all that, so… after the show that night we asked the bus driver to take us to Wal-Mart. We got a grill, got meat, got all the fixings, and whatever you need. And we thought, we can’t do this outside, so we have to take this to our hotel room.

And then what happened?

J-Splif: We opened all of the windows, started a barbecue, which wasn’t a good idea, of course. There was smoke everywhere, we set off the alarms, and the whole hotel had to evacuate. We had to run into the hallway to get the fire extinguisher and started spraying everywhere. Police and firetrucks came and we were like — Oops.

Every band has to have a good hotel smashing story to tell, though?

J-Spilf: Yeah, but we got a fat bill. So maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. I’m still trying to get these guys to chip in [laughter]. But that is one of the craziest stories we have in store right now. At least the story paid for itself because now we get to tell it.

Haha, yeah! It is a good one.
