A Sweet Sixteen – 2016’s Best Music

 Metronomy – Summer 08

Our decade’s equivalent of: 2009’s Tommy Sparks by Tommy Sparks

Or the equivalent of: The halfway point between Moroder disco and millennial indie.

Extra Notes: The first Metronomy album I’ve enjoyed as a whole.

Standout track: Old Skool

Zomby – Ultra

Our decade’s equivalent of: 2004’s Treddin on Thin Ice by Wiley

Or the equivalent of: Haunted igloos in the uncanny valley.

Extra Notes: I’m not a Zomby fan, but this turned out to be one of my very favourites this year.

Standout track: Sweetz

James Blake – The Colour in Anything

Our decade’s equivalent of: 2008’s 808s & Heartbreak by Kanye West

Or the equivalent of: Shuffling around the corridors of a millennial’s very own Wayne Manor.

Extra Notes: His best album yet. That said, can he and other solo artists out there stop putting 17 tracks or more on albums, please? That was 2016’s worst trend, IMHO.

Standout track: I Hope My Life

Get it on iTunes

 Blood Orange – Freetown Sound

Our decade’s equivalent of: 1988’s 69 by A.R. Kane

Or the equivalent of: When the 80s became the 2010s.

Extra Notes: I love that Nelly Furtado is on this.

Standout track: Augustine

Get it on iTunes

David Bowie – Blackstar

Our decade’s equivalent of: 2006’s The Drift by Scott Walker

Or the equivalent of: A night out watching Brecht, Chekhov and Artaud.

Extra Notes: Out of 7 tracks, five are amazing, and two aren’t (Sue & ‘Tis A Pity). Those five though make this an album of the year.

Standout track: Girl Loves Me

Get it on iTunes
