20 Greatest Love Songs I’ve Ever Heard

5. First Time Ever I Saw Your Face — Roberta Flack

Though many would’ve chosen Killing Me Softly, I had to go with this track for its raw emotion. It’s my favorite Roberta Flack cut, but more than that, it takes a more natural and honest approach to expressing love than her most famous song – the lyrics are exceptionally enigmatic, bringing forth images of the absolute moment of love’s inspiration [1].

4. Beautiful – Meshell Ndegeocello

A song with about three lyrics, Beautiful is one of the simplest manifestations of emotion that I’ve ever heard. A piano, a light guitar, and Meshell’s delicate sigh give this song life and the heart a croon that calls out to any lover within a breath’s touch.

3. A Song For You – Donny Hathaway

Though not the original, Donny Hathaway’s version of A Song For You is one of those melodies that stays in your soul forever. With a piano intro as delicate as the sunrise creeping over the horizon, the song is wrapped in soft strings and Donny’s earnest voice. It’s a love song that goes through the development of friends to lovers in an honest and uncompromising way: I love you in a place where there’s no space or time. I love you for my life. You’re a friend of mine.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.

I dunno about “I’m so in love I could puke songs” – I’m certain that if/when I’m in that specific state of love, my mind is too busy to actually care about music or movies.

But I gotta say… roberta flack and selena *laughs*

I don’t know why I was just reminded of Enchanted and Amy Adams singing “How does she knowwwwwwwwwww you love her~~~” LOL

@amy, HaHa. I don’t know why you’d be reminded of Enchanted.

Anyway, Roberta Flack’s awesome, and that song is just intense O.O.

And Selena, yeah, my childhood. What can I say?

@Camiele, Roberta Flack is ALWAYS intense. I also like Jill Scott :)

I think I was reminded of that Enchanted song because of that happy Disney-Go-Lucky characteristic of Amy Adams that makes me think of Happy Love Song with that song. Everyone dances and everyone is happy, with the old people doing the park dance too… it gives me that feeling of euphoria even though the lyrics have little to do with being in love, and more about questioning if you’ve shown you love that person enough.

And talking about Selena, I think her lyrics translate perfectly for the Latin Pop market haha I like really dramatic lyrics in Spanish that tend to sound kinda cheesy when thought about in English. Like Gianmarco’s Simplemente Spiritual, which is a mix of a love song/sex song. LOL There’s a verse where he goes “The moon of my nights, the sun in the morning, and I live in a sweet poem each time she loves me” xD

@amy, ZOMG THAT’S THE CUTEST SHIT IN THE WORLD… HaHA!

Both the lyrics and the Enchanted moment, just tooooooo sweet for my life! I’m just on a high because my best friend in the universe just got married! Like…WHAT?! So, Valentine’s Day, love songs, marriage. ::sigh::

          I just love love, don’t you…?

DAMN! I left so many songs off. I should’ve shot for 25 songs… but then I’m sure I would’ve left off more songs and it would’ve just become a huge problem. Gah… I hate lists… HaHa.
