100 Songs of Chinese Music

The Not So Old~

13. Song of Sunset (夕陽之歌) – Anita Mui (梅艳芳)

This song, and especially in this performance, has all the feels.

Hong Kong superstar Anita Mui performed this song of her 1989 album In Brasil, a cover of the Japanese original The Song of Evening Glow (夕焼けの歌) by Masahiko Kondo, during her 2003 Farewell Concert, the year she passed away due to cervical cancer.

14. Fake Monk (假行僧) – Cui Jian (崔健)

I know Cui Jian, the Father of Chinese Rock, is more famous for doing the Nothing to my Name (一无所有) [clip] song that became the unofficial anthem of the students, but really- isn’t Fake Monk a better crafted song anyway? Here’s the lyrics translation.

15. Never Ending Love (對你愛不完) – Aaron Kwok (郭富城)

And from serious- we have to go to pure Cpop 90s cheese and Aaron Kwok’s bopping and hand gesture in his chorus~ “Dui ni ai, ai, ai, bu wan~~~” xD Also noticed the high quality 90s graphics cheese.

Seriously, Aaron Kwok is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop. Another one is…

16. Born to Be Wild (餓狼傳說) – Jacky Cheung (張學友)

Yup, Jacky Cheung. Don’t confuse his name with Jackie Chan’s.

Jacky is also one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop, and is considered to have the best voice among them. In 1994, he was the best-selling Cantonese singer in Asia, and was awarded at that year’s World Music Awards… when that award mattered a bit more.

In Born to Be Wild (a single of the album of the same name), he basically puts every element of a Michael Jackson hit song into one. It’s glorious. It’s got werewolves sounds, dancing in a moon crater, it has that face-morphing effect- it’s basically Black or White meets Thriller.

  1. Such a great feature! “Mama Get Me a Guitar” is cute. The Chin Tsai song is so good- what is the title? Either characters or pinyin romanization. Wow at Ding Wei. Laure Shang has such a cool voice. And I’ve probably said before that I really like the clarity of the voices of the Tibetan/-influenced? singers.

The Chin Tsai song is The Forgotten Times (被遺忘的時光) :) – and yes, they all have such quality to their voice. I love it.

My favorite new one is #4, Chinese Cabbage. Every time it comes on, I have to sing lol and my mom was listening to it, and translated saying it’s a super sad song! Something about not having your mom and your dad re-marrying, and being poor with your brother having something to wear and something to eat, while you are left with just broth and asking for something to wear.

You have to be grateful of the excess many live in now, the biggest complain has to be that iPhones and Galaxy phones are getting bigger. Seriously. Grateful for the food that I enjoy every single day.
