Gangnam Style: Horsing Around Pop Culture

Rodrigo: Outside of Glee, I’m sure reality tv shows will use it.
Amy: They should use it on So You Think You Can Dance. LOL
Rodrigo: Cable shows won’t for obvious reasons.

Amy: And someone should audition to American Idol with that song, hahaha. Even though it’s going to be William Hung 2.0
Rodrigo: But maybe later on… like say, Brody’s daughter on Homeland Season 1 listening to Gangman Style like she did when she was  listening to Pumped Up Kicks when it was still popular. Hey, they can edit and add the song faster.
Amy: Showtime has a lot more chance to include the song than HBO or AMC. xD
Rodrigo: The Walking Dead can’t because of the zombie apocalypse. Boardwalk Empire can’t because it would be severely out of character for the show… despite Nucky Thompson Walk Like an Egyptian [MV] on the Season 3 premiere.
Amy: I could see Howard doing a mention of Gangnam Style on The Big Bang Theory.
Rodrigo: He’s going to be on outer space for a while. But maybe Raj will dance to it while drunk. I’m sure one TV show will have someone dressed as Psy for Halloween. Probably Rex Lee (a.k.a. Lloyd from Entourage) on Suburgatory.
Amy: I have no idea what shows are on air. xD
Rodrigo: I forgot you don’t watch American TV shows unless it’s miniseries or TV films. LOL
Amy: I haven’t watched anything American in a long while. I haven’t had time to watch much anything at all….
Rodrigo: I thought of Suburgatory because Rex Lee is Asian-American, and also because the show used Alexandra Stan’s Mr. Saxobeat (another song that got big in Latin America, but mostly Europe) when George (Jeremy Sisto) took a shower in his best friend’s modern shower.

Rodrigo: Also, I can see Community poking at Gangman Style via Ken Jeong. But that would be too easy for them.
Amy: I thought Community is already in its last season?
Rodrigo: Entering its 4th season without their showrunner. 30 Rock is the one that’s entering their 7th and final season.
Amy: I’d like to see Alec Baldwin doing Gangnam Style. LOL. But I could maybe settle for Tracy Morgan for it.
Rodrigo: It’s either Morgan or Jack McBrayer. McBrayer’s face is horsey enough for this thing.
Amy: Tracy Morgan is going to be all like “get down, man, just lemme try something here.” and then he does the dance while McBrayer’s on all four.
Rodrigo: LOL
Amy: I think this whole Gangnam Style thing is going to be even funnier in ten years when it makes it to 2010s movies looking back on “better days” for this new generation. xD
Rodrigo: The Simpsons will easily have Homer getting obsessed with the dancing moves.
Amy: Oh, man. Can you imagine Psy on the show? xD “Look, Marge! He’s riding an invisible horse!!!!” LOL
Rodrigo: Hahaha! Psy could easily do a cameo on Simpsons. On other shows, he would feel forced.
Amy: He could as easily show up on South Park, though. I dunno many people who would willingly show up there.
Rodrigo: I could see PSY guesting on Matt LeBlanc’s Episodes [S1, S2] if that show had a bigger budget like Entourage used to have for showcasing a shitload of guest stars. But UK shows aren’t big on the money, sadly.
Amy: I don’t think YG would be too picky to get Psy on any show, though…
Rodrigo: They need to take advantage on him while he’s red hot popular right now.

Considering I must be one of annoying friends that share all the Gangnam in facebook, yes I did like the song. It was catchy and funny, and that’s how I like my music lately (besides the music I already like or anime songs).
I think all the social commentary people talk about, it’s mostly for its title, what with Gangnam being the most wealthy district in South Korea. But the lyrics of the song itself is about this (upper-class) guy who tells all what he wants in a (upper-class) woman, and then describes himself as a match for said woman?

@Mirella, hahaha and that’s in contrast to Rap and Hip Hop saying that they drink the most expensive booze, drive the coolest cars, but want them hos ? xD

    • Rodrigo says:

@Mirella, The difference between you and the other friend that posts Gangman Style non-stop is that the other person I know is more of an “Asian pride” type of person and would probably like Gangman Style almost by default. You like it because it’s catchy and funny.

Checking Facebook at the moment, now there’s like 6 persons that I know who like the GS song.

I forgot to mention that some of the videos that turned “viral” lately have been Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s PONPONPON [MV] as well as Hyuna’s Bubble Pop [MV], but they never made it past the 50M views or never reached the status of “people that don’t listen to it have watched it”

  3. I remember that “Asereje” got quite a bit of airplay on the Latino outlets here in the US, but it never got as big as I heard it got in Europe. I think I saw something about it on the German news (Deutsche Welle)…

anyways, Gangnam Style is fun and I hope that since it’s intentionally funny, that it doesn’t come across the same mean “make fun of the Asian guy” way as the William Hung business sort of turned out in the USA…

@chrryblssmninja, Aserejé got pretty popular among hispanic countries and Europe, yes. I remember one of my university teachers briefly singing a bit of the song and it was lulzy.

I have no idea how long Gangman Style’s staying power will last in the States, but it’s catchy right now. Even members of my family talked about it briefly (they know it as “El Baile del Caballo”), and they know jackshit about Kpop (in my case, I am aware of Kpop thanks to YAM’s shoving promotion and talks about it).

William Hung… lol, I forgot he existed until Amy and I chatted about GS.

With the 2012 Emmy Awards airing tonight, does anyone thinks that the song will be used somehow and/or the song being danced by anyone? I guess Psy himself could do a cameo and teach it to Jimmy Fallon in the intro segment… or maybe Rex Lee or Ken Jeong imitate Psy.
