YAM’s Top Films of 2011 Redux

Drive

After a year, our Top15 of 2011’s bridesmaid film — Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive — has finally become the top reigning champ of the staff with its stylish ambiance, music and visuals meeting strong performances with the cherry on top of a critically acclaimed (but Oscar-snubbed) performance by Ryan Gosling.

There isn’t an aspect of this film that doesn’t contribute to its overwhelming nature. Every frame seems carefully chosen and full of such a simple beauty that reminds us of the relaxation of a night drive. Each moment of hyper violence is just as remarkable as the last — perfectly fitting and not at all gratuitous. Even in its calmest moments, the score by Cliff Martinez serves to seduce us with false safety, knowing that at any corner someone may be waiting and watching.

Yes, the staff of YAM Magazine will be talking about Drive for years to come.

Your turn! What are your favorite movies of 2011?
