YAM’s Most Anticipated Films of 2017

4. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

dir. Matthew Vaughn

This action-comedy spy sequel has Taron Egerton reprise his role as new recruit Eggsy, perhaps with some of the original crew returning. Joining the cast are Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, and Pedro Pascal as “Jack Daniels.”

3. Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

dir. Rian Johnson

After an auspicious beginning with both the main storyline (The Force Awakens) and the side quests (Rogue One), The Last Jedi bring us the first film of the Disney era that won’t be derivative or entrenched in nostalgia… possibly. Also, what little we know about the movie makes already fans’ mind blow up with all kinds of speculations. Who is the last Jedi? Very possibly Luke. But is it even singular? Or does it mean Luke AND Rey as the official Spanish title suggests?

Why is the title fond red in the posters? That only happened before in the last movie of each trilogy! Why were aliens wearing space tuxedos in those leaked behind-the-scenes pictures? So many questions!

And in a more sobering note, this is also the last film we will see dearly departed Carrie Fisher. I know I will tear up whenever she appears on screen, and when they dedicate the movie to her in the credits.

2. Wonder Woman

dir. Patty Jenkins

With Wonder Woman being the highlight of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice for many viewers, her solo film debut is arriving with plenty of anticipation. The World War I setting has tons of potential, but I hope Diana’s awesome electric cello-driven theme will show up as well.

1. The Lego Batman Movie dir. Chris McKay

The LEGO Movie was easily one of the best films from 2014, and Will Arnett’s vocal performance as Batman was one of the film’s biggest (and hilarious) highlights. And now, Arnett’s Batman gets his own movie within the Lego universe. The trailers for the film, as well as the animation, marketing and the main cast (including Ralph Fiennes, Rosario Dawson, Zach Galifianakis and Michael Cera) makes the film pretty promising to watch – it wouldn’t surprise most people if Arnett’s Batman ends up being better received than Ben Affleck’s take on the Caped Crusader.

By the way, Arnett’s voice acting alone is one of the main reasons to see The LEGO Batman Movie, especially if you have seen him in Netflix’s BoJack Horseman (which got much better in its 2nd and 3rd seasons). He sounds funny and entertaining, not to mention capable of headlining comedies.

Despite having Seth Grahame-Smith as the screenwriter for The LEGO Batman Movie, we can hope that Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s comedy influence will still be present in the movie.
