YAM Loves: Doona Bae
Bae took up photography, some of which you can check out on Doona.net, as well as her published photobook essays; Doona’s London Play, Doona’s Tokyo Play, and Doona’s Seoul Play.
By the year 2004, Doona Bae was already back working with Park Chan-Wook on his stage play Sunday Seoul, as well as Bong Joon-Ho’s The Host. During those years, she focused a lot more on her photography as well as her TV work and as a model. Then in 2009, the chance to work with Hirokazu Kore-eda came in his movie Air Doll, where she would be playing a sex doll who came to life.
How Bae dealt with having so many nude scenes throughout Air Doll is better explained with how her mother convinced her to take the role back in 2000 for Plum Blossom (청춘) [1], “Does it make sense for an actress to avoid bed scenes because she is afraid of taking off her clothes and showing her body?” A month after the release of Plum Blossom, Bae received a call from an ex saying he was “ashamed” of having gone out with her.
That’s when she realized she’d rather be a good actress than a good girlfriend.
Thanks for posting all the BDN love, she’s amazing and I adore her. It’s good to see her finally get more attention.
@Jara, she deserves all the attention and more… I hope I get to see As One soon.
She is in Air doll of Koreeda too, one of her best performance. I love this movie and Doona too of course. Greetings!
@Mario Salazar, yes, of course! That’s on page 3 :)
I did not see the rest of the pages, great!
@Mario Salazar, no worries! Was Air Doll your first Doona Bae movie? Where did you first see her?
I saw her in 4 o 5 movies, i will keep see her in the rest of her Filmography. I like too much Air doll, this is one of my favorite movies, but I saw her for first time in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance but she did not impress me (even that she was really good) but i started to know her, and when late i saw kooreeda´s movie, I fell in love. Nice post. Greeting!
@Mario Salazar, you should really watch Barking Dogs Never Bite and Linda Linda Linda (and Take Care of my Cat), for sure. :) Also, now that Cloud Atlas is out, it’s probably a must for Doona fans as well :)
Are you still followinf Bae Doona’s works?
Yes, we are!
