Ten Notable Animated Shorts Between 2000-2009

Joining the YAM’s Unofficial Animation Week with a little something.

A lot of people love short films, they’re less time-consuming than feature length films, and there are many times when we find a diamond in the making. Guillermo del Toro thinks so! Isn’t he pushing for a feature length of that freaky cute little Alma?

So here we have a list of ten animated shorts released between 2000-2009

The only rule? Choose one short a year.

2000 – Rejected

Don Hertzfeldt hovers that fine line of cult hit and actual popularity. A lot of people seem to know him, just as many have no idea who he is. Maybe you only recognize his stick figures, or the little cloud famous for his “bleeding anus.”

Rejected was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short, only beaten by…

2001 – Father and Daughter

The Academy has the reputation of choosing sentimentality over lighter fare, which explains why Father and Daughter was ahead of Rejected. Whether you think one is cooler than the other, Father and Daughter has its merits for bringing a moving story forth with style.

Are you familiar with Don Hertzfeldt’s amazing “Everything will be Okay?” He’s probably the only animator who deserves more than one spot on this list, and I’d have given that short a nod as well. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IUX0Qy-IDM

@jennifer, it felt unfair to add more than one Don Hertzfeldt’s short… or a Koji Yamamura one. But yeah, I’ve seen Everything will be okay, Lily and Jim, and The meaning of life.

Damn, Harvey Krumpet. I saw that in an Animation Festival… and oh boy was that awesome/depressive… also the little song of “God is better than futbol, God is better than beer” stayed with me for some time… of course the impact of it all was taken from me because I was distracted by Geoffrey Rush’ sexy sexy voice doing the narration :P

That said… I freaking love the Danish Poet and Logorama :D

@Mirella, Harvey Krumpet has been playing on and off on iSat xD just… FYI. Did you get to see Mary and Max?

@amy, Oh I have noticed! I just catched on iSat some time ago even if it was almost ending :P
And I did watch Mary and Max :D
