Our Top Guilty Pleasure Movies

When we began talking about our guilty pleasures in the YAM Magazine Writer’s Lounge — yes, we have one because we’re dorky like that — we wanted to figure out what a movie needed to be considered “guilty” in the first place.

Let’s face it, different groups have different likes, so you’re bound to get flack for liking a mainstream Hollywood film when you hang out with the artsy cinephiles who only revere Goddard or Kurosawa, or flack from the popular kids for liking a cult film. Critics and audiences, one and the same but never on the same page. We love to hate each other… and hate to love one another?

So we made a bunch of the YAM Magazine team dust off that side of their DVD collections they don’t want people to see and made them reveal their shameful secrets with the world.

Dig deep, young padawan, and find movies that are truly BAD that you love. BAD IS THE KEY.

This… is what we got from them:

Lindsay

I’m a sucker for romantic comedies in general, to my shame… Catch and Release

Courtney

I have too many to count… films I admit are horrible, yet love to watch and rewatch, are pretty much all I buy

  • Repo: A Genetic Opera
  • Moon Child

But I think the worst one so far is Princess and the Goblin. That movie is my go-to when I’m having a hard time sleeping. Something about the horrid animation makes me want to close my eyes, then the repetitive, worbly score in the background eases me to sleep.

Marya

  • The Twilight Series
  • 13 Going on 30
  • Someone like You
  • Puss in Boots — the 1988 version starring Christopher Walken.
  • Conquest for the Planet of the Apes

Roxanne

  • Beerfest
  • Robinhood: Men in Tights
  • Scary Movie (the whole series)
  • Chasing Papi
  • Meet the Spartans

Basically, parodies are my guilty pleasures.

The Grinch… live-action film version, right? Lol. That one escaped my mind…

    • amy says:

@Rodrigo, oh yeah. I mean, I didn’t grow up with the animation version or the book, so I didn’t have any pre-conceived aversion towards this adaptation. I watch it every Xmas with my mother, LOL

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a bad film that I liked, though. Probably the last one has been Spring Breakdown. I really think it’s unwarranted that it’s got less than 5 in IMDb. LOL I laughed wayyyyy more than in Bridesmaids.

  2. Juan Barquin says:

Oh man Amy, you included Spring Breakdown! I would have definitely gone with that one if I remembered. I enjoy it so much and maybe I’ve seen it twice. Totally underrated and even though it’s not a “great” movie by any means, it’s just so witty and silly that you can’t help but laugh. Plus, Wilson Phillips!

  3. Julili says:

Lol, I think I have only one and that is “A Walk To Remember”. Yes, you may judge me.

  4. I’m so glad you picked a photo from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes for my list. that movie is so awesomely bad.

  5. Joel Burman says:

Marya: Conguest is not a guilty pleasure! Its good for real. Its not a coincidence they are re-booting the franchice on this story!

Damn I really need to watch all the original films before seeing the new one.

    • @Joel Burman,

Don’t see the new one! It’s a travesty. It looks awful. I’m not going to see it because my love for the original film and my guilty pleasure love of its sequels forbid me to sully my mind.

      • Joel Burman says:

@Cinema Fanatic, actually there is only one sequel to the original conquest. Battle of the Planet of the Apes. Even a hardcore fan like me have a real hard time with that one.

You might be on to something with this latest remake. I just hope its better than the Tim Burton version that was really awful!

        • @Joel Burman,

what I meant was my love for the original Planet of the Apes film (from 68) and my guilty pleasure love of its 4 sequels (which includes Conquest)

I never watched the Tim Burton one for the same reason.

  6. Joel Burman says:

Amy: Daredevil? Ouch… I guess that would be considered a guilty pleasure if you were into it. Is it the skin suit that gets your groove on? =)

    • amy says:

@Joel Burman, hahaha – no (…), I like the blind visual aspect in the film. I haven’t watched it in years, possibly since my roommate and I stopped living together. xD

I don’t see you sharing your shames, Joel. ;P

  7. CS says:

    Blue Streak
The Fast and the Furious series (especially the latest Fast Five)
    Road House
    Gremlins 2
    Undercover Brother

    • amy says:

@CS, what do you find in Fast and the Furios? xD Just wondering.

    • Rodrigo says:

@CS, Linking the first FATF film wouldn’t really be a guilty pleasure film, I think. Haven’t seen Fast Five, but it’s the most critically acclaimed FATF film. The other films can be guilty pleasures, yes.

  8. Rodrigo says:

Now that I remember that Cuba Gooding Jr. exists, I forgot to mention Rat Race here. Funny film that many could view as a shitty film, but it was entertaining for me at least.

    • amy says:

@Rodrigo, you know what my favorite part of Rat Race was? LOL. I haven’t seen it since then, but the first time I saw it I laughed so hard when Jon Lovitz does the Hitler thing. That whole sequence of them in the Nazi museum or something, the mustache and the burning of the tongue so he speaks in pseudo-German to the veterans. LOL

  9. Camiele says:

First of all, there are few of these that are actually GREAT movies!! Repo is AWESOME! Men in Tights… AWESOME! Dumb and Dumber… the godfather of all stupid humour! I’ll admit that I love Super Mario Bros. and that, yes, it’s one of the worst films EVER. But, come on, I think some of those on the list were kind of harsh.
