Love for Studio Ghibli and Why Little Girls Should Grow Up with It
To top it all off, Kiki’s Delivery Service is the coming of age story of a little girl! Oh gosh, I love Japanese animation. Kiki’s ultimate goal is to be able to fend for herself, and as she gets acquainted with the locals, she begins losing her powers. She also meets a boy (of course there’s a boy!), but her ultimate goal is not to be with him – even better, she gets to save him!
I’m all excited already~
Though the true lead in Princess Mononoke is really Ashitaka, San — a.k.a. Princess Mononoke, who is not really a princess — is, well, pretty rocking. First of all, she lives in the forest with her wolf god family. She rides on them, and knows how to use weapons. She is protecting the forest as best as she can.
Also worth a mention in this film is Lady Eboshi, who is pretty strong as well — even if a little misguided, but aren’t we all? She not only leads a whole lot of people, she also teaches other women how to be strong. In fact, all of the women are pretty rocking in this one.
Can I just say I love you, Miyazaki-san?
Spirited Away goes back to being a kid, and shows us all the importance of a name. Chihiro is a regular frightful kid who gets into the truly unknown, but she heads on with the help of Haku. Chihiro also gets to save her parents!
