Camiele: A Life in Movies

2001: Ichi The Killer

More digging into Japanese horror films, and I came across this piece of disgusting awesomeness. It’s another one I’ve written AT EXHAUSTING LENGTH about in the past, and I’ll do it again. One thing Takashi Miike is genius at, besides all the glorious blood and guts, is creating a touching and tragic story. You just have to sift through some entrails to get to it. Ichi the Killer really does put the gore in gorgeous!

2002: Raising Victor Vargas
My introduction to someone who’s now become my ultimate “bias”, if you will. Every time I find myself falling for another actor or singer, I remember Vikter Rasuk and his perfection and, well… yeah… HaHa. Truth be told, I love the rawness of this film, Rasuk’s debut. Even more than that, I love how honest it is about family. And I love this Altagracia Guzman… the single most badass grandmother in the world!

2003: Oldboy

There are just… no words. Oldboy is stapled near the top of my favorite films of all time. It’s daring, gorgeous, heartbreaking, and seriously one of the most intense films ever made with quite possibly the most soul-shattering ending in the world! I’ve written so much about this thing I don’t even know what else I can say!

2004: The Incredibles

What do you say about one of the best films Pixar’s ever released? I know Toy Story is their magnum opus, so to speak. But The Incredibles was just a flawless film from beginning to end, the story of superheroes out of commission. It’s really a deep film about one’s own place in the world when society takes the one thing that makes you “incredible” away from you. Quite an existential film, if you think about it. And it’s just all around a fantastic animation! Plus, I mean… Edna!

2005: Dave Chappelle’s Block Party

(Disclaimer: For the record, IMDb lists this film as being released in 2005) There’s too much pure beauty in the concept and execution of this block-party-cum-documentary. To give you just the slightest inkling, I give you the Fugees reunion.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.
